Turns out oil breaks down the silicone over time. Since the truck's a closed crankcase ventilation system, there's oil in the intake and it wears out the stock components over time.

I found an upgraded set of couplers that are highly recommended but the company that makes/sells them is closed until September 1st. I can't risk running old boots during my tow to NV so I'm going with a stockish setup.

Ordered the new set and should be good for another 100k miles some time next week.

    Sorry for the threadjack.

Why am I not surprised at Ford for doing something like this?

International built the 6.0 engine and screwed up a ton of things, and they made things worse with the 6.4. That's why Ford's brought their new diesel engine development 100% in-house.

It's really no different then the Dana Corporation frames collapsing on our Tacomas. Outsourced production can bring about quality issues if the outsourcing company doesn't do their due diligence.

We'll see how Ford does with the 6.7l diesel. The power numbers are there, but it's time that'll prove whether or not it's reliable.

I've owned 7 Fords over the years and they were all very good to me. No more or less issues than I've had with the stock components on my Tacoma.

I actually wish Ford stayed competitive in the compact pickup market to force Toyota's hand. We probably would have ended up with a better Tacoma as a result of it.
