You use decoys? If not, I highly suggest it. It really keeps them focused on something other than just where the call is coming from. Best of luck bro!

My dear friends’ daughter got her first Osceola (already got two Easterns) this morning down around Tampa. She is quite the hunter.

Nice job! Congrats! Osceola's are supposed to be a little harder to get right?

I think they are a tad more weary, but mainly there are less of them in general. Also they typically have huge spurs, hers not so much.

Decoys are for rookies and folks that don't really know how to "hunt" turkeys. They cheapen the experience terribly. Of course, that's just my opinion. I won't even watch any turkey hunting shows or videos because they all are shooting turkeys over strutting decoys. A monkey could do that.

    Yep. That’s your opinion...

BTW I have killed multiple turkeys without them and I am self taught at calling and turkey hunting so there’s that.

    Hahaha! Well written.

Based on the guys demeanor he is either just trying to get an argument started or hunts domesticated turkeys. Not all areas or turkey hunting is the same.

Also, is he saying that people who use duck and geese decoys, deer decoys, or predator decoys are idiots too? If so, I guess a lot of hunters are either “rookies or don’t know how to hunt”. SMH

Its hard enough to get them to break away from their harem of hens, at least around here, I do get them to respond but getting them to come in to shooting range is a different story;). I usually end up crossing paths with them on my atv outings...hop off the atv and blast one. Prob not ideal but it works.

I am not trying to start an argument. I just don't believe in the "by any means available" style of turkey hunting these days. I have been turkey hunting for a LONG time and the worst thing to happen to turkey hunting, IMO, is the commercialization of it. These days, everybody just wants to kill a turkey for the bookface and instalife picture.
Turkey hunting is sacred, to me, and cannot be compared to any other pursuit.
And, by the way, I hunt 99% public land in SC. I am, admittedly, very old school about it. I hunt with a mouth call and a suction yelper (trumpet or wingbone). No vest.
You are welcome to come down any time to hunt these domesticated turkeys. LOL
And, I didn't call anyone an idiot.

I hunt with decoys. Im relatively new to the activity. I love watching a big Tom beat down and display for a decoy. Sometimes I don’t even shoot. I imagine without a decoy, I would miss the show.

I try to refrain from any anti hunting style declarations. Why? There always someone with a method that’s even harder that thinks your method is too easy.

There some old cooter in a cabin saying: Mouth call? For pussies. A real hunter just uses his mouth. :). I’m exaggerating but that’s the gist.

I hunt highly pressured turkeys even if it’s not on public land. I have one property to hunt that is frequented by other and limited time to do so. I used to hunt without decoys and was still successful but when you are hunting pressured birds they can easily hang up and a decoy jake and hen can have a tendency to bring them in.

I only had one mission on Saturday and it was to call in a turkey for my wife, but when two came in we simultaneously shot and got two. The first spot we started out didn’t even produce a gobble or any action.

The turkeys at the second spot were a long way away when I started calling and were very weary. They didn’t even start closing the distance for the first 20 mins of calling. They couldn’t even see the decoys until they came into the field since the field was surrounded by steep terrain on 3 sides. When they finally stepped in the field they were 100 yards away. If it hadn’t been for the jake decoy they may have not committed.

I think anything that can get a turkey within now or shotgun range is fair and ethical hunting. Even with decoys many times turkeys will not commit.
