Turkey hunting and BS welcome!

Very, All I can think about is getting back into the woods.

 

Sure is. I guess if it was easy everyone would be doing it.

 

Thats what people that never hunted turkey find out. yeah once they come in they are easy target but its getting them to come in shooting range. Ive had them gobble tons, rarely do they come running. Although I did get one to come in from over 500yds away, and watched him run down the road....down to 10' away. by the time we got him that close we didnt have the heart to shoot him.lol we were not really hunting turkey that day so it was interesting.

 

It's sweet when they gobble back though isn't it? A thing I really like about Turkey hunting is that it's spring and i'm not freezing my ass off in the dark stuck up in a tree hahaha!

 

Only birds I heard gobble we’re the ones answering my call from the car window. Right on the other side of the mountain that I was hunting . Drove around in the car . When I was in the woods I was probably 500 yards from them .

I got my eye I that. I also found a 28" all purpose. Could get that and a few chokes and have one gun to rule them all!

 

Are they entering and exiting the field at same location day after day?

Probably roosting close to that field. Run a locater call in the evening to pinpoint the roost.

 

I don’t have permission to hunt there . I do directly behind them on the other side of the mountain . It’s quite the walk . I was in there this morning. Probably a 25-30 mph wind ,the tree tops were moving 6-8’ I was about 500 yards from them . No responses from calling because of the wind . Of course I didn’t know they were there until I drove around to the other side of that mountain.

 

yeah its really fun when theres 2 or 3 gobbling at split seconds from each other...they set each other off. LOL hard part is getting them to break away from their hens!

 

Were they roosted when you heard them? Id go back in the late afternoon and see if you can get one returning to the roost.

If I was going to go with an optic for my turkey gun I would go with an EoTech. But when I factor in the cost and the extra weight its kind of a no-go for me. I don't run a sling so its just more weight for me to carry around in the spring woods.

Edit: Fiber optics get the job done for me at this point.

 

If you look at the Burris FFIII you will see its a very small optic, also used on pistols. Negliable weight to it.

 

I had an ffIII on my 870 for the preceding 2 seasons. Definitely a great optic with lightning fast target acquisition but I crossthreaded the battery case and sent it back for their unconditional warranty.

In the meantime I went back to the fiber optic sights that came with my turkey barrel and super appreciated the cleaner lines, lighter weight(optic+mount), and lower maintenance. It’s nice not having to worry about rain clouding ur scope and whether or not it’s turned on lol.

I don’t have the greatest vision so I usually shun open sights but with a shotgun that’s less of an issue

Not roosted . They were in a field were I can’t hunt and they gobbled because I called to them .

 

You can only hunt until noon in NY
No sense in roosting them if I can’t hunt there

 

we roost them and come back in the am and sit within 100yds of the tree and kill them in the am.

 

That’s how it is supposed to be All my birds have been mid morning.
