Lots of woods around here but it’s either No Hunting or already being hunted by someone. The 120 acres I have permission to hunt behind my house also has 4 other guys with permission in and out during deer season. Also most of the property I hunted today I was trespassing . The Way I look at it is during the week pretty much nobody around and I usually go deep we’re Im not going to run in to anybody Weekends I stick to were I have permission. Also the largest piece of wooded land in the county adjoins the farmland across the road and it’s owned by the Audubon Society  Hunting is not too far from being a rich mans sport . I never really hunt public (state ) land either . Most of it is too far away and I don’t want to get shot by a idiot city hunter :D

Very true. I was blown away at the cost when I got back into hunting last year. I'm 40 now and had not hunted since I was a kid. Especially archery, holy crap have bows and parts gone up. You can buy a really fine firearm for the cost of a new bow.

I just ordered a new call, a "scratch box."

It's an very old style of call. As soon as I learned about it I had to have one. They're also cheap. $12.95 plus some shipping and you got a call. I'll let you guys know how it works. I like the idea of using old school equipment.

Anybody of use a call like this?

Most of that stuff they try and sell you is stuff that you don't even need.

I’ve got something very similar, I’ll post a pick when I get home.
Mines made into a box call, the rod is depressed with your index finger, produces great purrs and yelps simultaneously.

I use Enticer calls. I have a slate and Silver Fox. They are great calls and reasonably priced.

I also use Woodhaven mouth calls. I love hearing that sweet gobble when you get them interested.

I really think it's because they sell less of them due to less and less hunters every year, so they can make up for the r&d on them.

I'm no bowhunting snob. I bought a used crossbow for $250, we can use them in Florida for archery season. Works just fine. You can get some decent hunting tools at reasonable prices. A good rifle like a ruger American is only $300. Put a Nikon scope on it that costs about $100 and you have a nice hunting set up.

Crossbows decent. They are consistent, convenient and much more carefree as far as aiming etc. but I prefer a compound bow. There is just something about being stealthy enough to stand up draw your bow back while estimating yardage and letting her rip!

Worked 3 birds 3 times this morning. Off the roost and made 2 moves on them . From daylight and called it quits about 1115 . Big long beard and 2 jakes . Just would not come any closer than about 50-60 yards . Could see them plain as day . They even ignored my hen decoy . Threw everything at at them ,even the silent treatment. Roosted one bird last night got in there and 4 are gobbling . The last one to gobble was in a tree 10 yard from me  there was a small sapling full of leaves between me and him so I couldn’t see him until he flew out of the tree and landed about 600 yards away across the road :rofl:could here him spitting and drumming on the limb though . He didn’t gobble the night before when I roosted the bird behind him .:notsure:

Yea, I have a Maverick 88 made by Mossberg. 3” with a Rhino turkey choke. Mossberg barrel . . I need to pattern it at 50 and see what it does . I had multiple eye surgeries and ever since the woods plays nasty tricks on my eyes. Really sucks . Right now my right eye is blurry I need another procedure to clean the capsule that my artificial lens is in . Good thing I’m lefty .Thats another story that eye isn’t what it used to be either and I’m only 57 .

Do you have just a hen or do you have a jake decoy? I have had them come running in when they see the jake. The hen will work but they can’t stand a jake being near a hen if it’s a mature gobbler. At this point I would say try every trick you can think of. The worst thing that happens is you don’t get a bird but hopefully you will get one before the season runs out. Another thing... Sometime they won’t even gobble especially in a pressured area so always keep your hopes up because they may show up without making a sound. Good luck man!

Lay the Jake on top of the hen decoy....I've heard of that working with stubborn gobblers.
