Probably gonna feed the troll here, but are you serious? Judging by your avatar pic I'm guessing not though. You look like someone who never hunted before and can't understand what fun and excitement thousands if not millions of people experience in the woods/fields/etc every year hunting

Yeah, this isn't about me. It's about killing one of gods creatures for no good reason. Go buy some hamburger.

If you're going to eat meat, stick to a species raised for that purpose and let the wild things stay wild.

What the hell do you think hamburger is made of, slick? Moss?

Look at it this way: That turkey will eventually get chased down, torn to pieces, and eaten alive if it dies a 'natural' death. Shooting it is a much more humane death, with considerably less panic and pain first. And before it died, it lived a much better life than the cow that died to make your 'humane' hamburger

Man, my first post in here was going to be how I got skunked on my first turkey hunt but...

    :locked:

    :annoyed: my goodness.

Mostly it comes down to, you kill them for a purpose, going outdoors, seeing the wild, and also wild meat. Meat without all the chemicals given to most human raised meat. You get to see where your food comes from and having the balls to be able to kill something and not thinking meat comes from a store and not something living. It's about respect and having a connection with your food.

Also I'd say turkeys are really not one of the most defenseless birds (they can run, have spurs, and can fly) but statistically a 1 year turkey is pretty old (but you can say that about most wild animals). They are pretty smart and if they see you move a twitch while hunting, they are gone!

I get the frustrations with trophy hunters but most of us actual respect the animal enough to use all of it, so yes that can include a wall mount since that is part of the animal.

    Now

Season started on Monday here, but I work (of course) M-F so I haven't been out yet. Itching for the weekend.

    So yeah.

NM turkey hunting seems to be different than the East hunting. Heard from a member on here that it is "taking your gun for a walk".

Got in on friday around noon, hiked about 10 miles and didn't see any sign, except for where a turkey was harvested by a tank.
Figured out I was going to sit near the tank Saturday morning and did, heard 8 gobblesrs all around me at 7 am. I was calling them and they kept responding but would not move in. I went to go find them and by 8 they stopped. Hiked where I thought they were but they were gone!
Sunday morning I figured I knew where they were and I was going to get one! Heard one gobbler at 6:10 and nothing the rest of the day.

Great experience though, want to go out again since I have so much money into it now, but then again don't want to waste more haha

    Nice!

I had a pic of my tom I shot, I got to dig it out. I did get to shoot a hen a few years ago in the fall. They all were tasty :)

Thanks. My trophy shots are lame because I don't do trophy shots, lol.

Takes a lot of practice to use one properly. I use just the basic 3 reed unit you can buy at wal-mart or Dick's and it works pretty well for me. A friend of mine's dad uses a 4 reed and I swear he could turn Hens into Toms right before your eyes because he's such a good caller.

I have a couple box calls and one primos slate call. The raspy sounding one gets more responses. So look for one that says raspy, old hen etc or something similar. Mouth calls are fun once you get used to them, again use a raspy hen call. They also have different sizes so you may need to go up or down in size. If the size you use right now doesnt work try the opposite size.

I have a "jacked up" turkey box call. The gobblers loved it, was playing with them, they just never came in! I was looking at Knight and hale dual threat call. Looked pretty sweet but couldn't find in time before I left

I used to use box calls exclusively, but had a couple of gobblers in one season that caught the movement and buggered off before they got within range, so I started practicing mouth calls. I still don't use a mouth call as well as a box call, but it's hands free.
