Sometimes I shoot my way out of a jam too.

 

Been a rough season so far opening week I heard 3 gobbles all week none within a half mile. We had a horrible fire last summer that took about 15 of my normal spots . The birds are still there but the land is just a moonscape. They can see you or see where they expect to see a hen from 100s of yards away. Plus all the hunters are now trying to hunt in the same few spots in that area. Week number 2 was not much better than the first week but I did take a bird on the only nice day of the week.



Then Monday I got a real nice 3 year old two minutes from my truck I have tried for that bird for 3 years now he had a really weird gobble he got a free ride home in my truck on Monday.

 

Congrats. I hunted some moonscape long leaf pine burns this season here and you could see 400 yards just about everywhere. I understand.

 

It does make for some fantastic mushroom picking though.

 

Success! Called in 4 long beards this morning for a good friend. One of those hunts where it looked like it was over a couple times but turned out just fine.

I had a great day/ bad day today I tricked a old smart bird



Then I broke my trumpet loading him in the back of the truck.

 

He had some 1+ hooks on him which is pretty good for a mountain merriams on Public land

Lucky for me Lee over at Misfire game calls had another trumpet already made it will be shipped tomorrow

 

Called 6 Jake’s to 12 yards this morning . . Had them there 15 minutes before they crossed the logging road within 5 yards . Let them live another day . I was just below the tree line in the background when my camera took these picks this morning . It was right after this I moved up the hill that I called them in .
