I tried totally disassembling a CV in the middle of the canadian back country when i grenaded my front diff.

Couldn't figure it out. Took two people to get the retaining clip off too. Stupid messy as well.

Said fuck it after about 30-45min and just dropped the diff and gutted it.

Its a burfeild joint though..should come apart i just don't know how...

He just said he doesn't think he can drop/replace the diff by himself. He's a pretty skinny fella.

@Mademan925 says that is a beeech. I read you can drive without the CV's and people have different opinions on the damage you are doing to your bearings. He could drive it home the way it is but risk losing your core swap like I did when I did that, and possibly a accident if it goes south.

Sounds like someone needs to up their overbrand tool game when they get home. Those driveshaft bolts are mothers if they have been on for a while.

That's what I thought. I think the two times I saw it done is when the outer CV cage was broken in pieces, so it wasn't really attached to anything.

No you absolutely can NOT drive a 1st gen without the CV in. It literally helps hold in the wheel bearings. Otherwise your Brake calipers will be what holes your wheel on..and thats not good.

Right. I've read of folks cutting that to. But need a grinder pretty much.

    To the Goog's for research..

Sadly manual hubs would solve this all with a turn of a dial.

Shouldn't be too hard to remove and install the diff alone. I did it with no jack stands or a jack. Yes it is a pain in the ass but doable !

haha yea. But i'll take the stronger CV axle.

Looks like he just needs to pound the crap out of it to get the axle to slip the clip...

    https://youtu.be/o8iZpjPG4xM?t=2m57s

that's an ATV CV axle, but same design as ours..

Then the other is a tulip joint, fairly easy to take apart.

Going to need a drift, big hammer and something to hold the CV though..

Try local craigslist. There are several IFS axles in it.

Anyone here in Reno/Carson area have a lead on the parts? I could make a run down there with parts tonight but these are the only days I have free at all. Sat/Sun are booked for me.

Sounds like he found a guy who is letting him use his shop. I think he's gonna end up gutting the diff. I'll keep everyone posted.

Sweet. I talked to him but phone died during the convo. Hes thinking of gutting the diff. Looks pretty involved so we shall see. He might just try this option and regear when he gets home instead of dropping money into another diff

    nice.

Not a fun project...least he will be in a shop! haha Only has to pull the ring gear too really. I'd leave the pinion and just disconnect the front drive shaft and call it a day.

**UPDATE** He got it up on a lift this morning at the little shop he found. Turns out it is a destroyed wheel bearing. He's on his way to the dealer to see what they can do since the little shop doesn't have a press.
