FWIW, I would recommend coming out here some other time to avoid the shit show on the trails. I am sure the event is cool and all, but . . .

Also $200 to drive public trails :jerkoff:

Never mind after hearing that. I’d rather wait and just make a nice fun trip and have locals come show me and meet up

That would be my recommendation, we have a good crew out here that would certainly be willing to help arrange a trip with you (and anyone else for that matter).

Fellow 4th-gen 4Runner owners of TW, it's time to play a game called What Would You Do In My Shoes. Today it's a game of keep vs sell.

The long and the short of it is this: a friend's dad is selling a 4Runner. A white 2005, to be exact...just like mine. The difference is that his truck has about 50-60k miles more than mine does, but it also has the V8 while mine has the V6.

He's offering the truck to me at an extremely reasonable price-- for simplicity's sake, let's call it $5000. The truck is stock aside from a snorkel. It could use a little cleaning up and the driver's seat needs to be redone, but otherwise it's in good shape, is up-to-date on maintenance, and they want it to go to a good home.

For reference's sake, let's say I have $7000 into my truck as-is including the vehicle itself (modifications in signature). It's in good shape mechanically (for the most part) but has seen better days cosmetically. I love it and everything about it, but it could certainly use more power as when driving out to PA to go off-roading it seriously struggles to maintain speed going up the hills. If I could change one thing about my truck, it would be the engine.

Which presents the question: buy the V8 truck or keep my V6?

The options, as I see them now, are:
    1) Buy the V8 4Runner off my friend's dad and swap over all of the parts from my truck that can easily be swapped, then sell the V6 4Runner.
    2) Sell the V6 4Runner as-is and, assuming I get more for it than my friend's dad is asking for the V8 truck, buy the V8 4Runner and spend the difference in transaction money modifying it to be nearly identical to how my truck is modified now.
    3) Make life easy-ish for myself (for once) and keep my V6 truck.

It gets complicated when considering that I imported the 4Runner from Canada myself this January and do have an emotional attachment to it already. I worked hard to get this thing and would hate to see it go, but an opportunity is presenting itself and I'm seriously considering stepping up to the V8 truck. My plan is to keep whatever 4th gen I own for a maybe ~4 more years then upgrade to an early 5th gen.

I guess it really comes down to: a) is the V8 really that much better than the V6, and b) is it worth all the effort to go and buy a new truck, then spend a bunch of time/money/effort getting it to where my current 4Runner already is?

    So, what would you do?

Maybe I need to drive a V8 truck just to see if it's worth it...

For the most part I agree about the selling a modified vehicle thing, but these Toyotas seem to be a funny thing in the world of second-hand sales and from what I've seen they can go for nearly what the cost of the vehicle + the mods is, whereas usually you take a massive massive hit on the cost of the parts...

Exactly what I was thinking as I read this. The swap sounds good in theory, but is going to be a lot of work. I vote regear and run yours.

Interesting. It would definitely be less work to re-gear. Though the V8 truck is definitely in better, cleaner condition with less "bugs" than mine which is appealing. But in terms of headaches, could save quite a few.

How’s the rust look on the V8 since it is a north east vehicle?

Kind of depends on how much money I want to throw at it. My end goal is to race Ultra 4. So I'd need to pick a class and build it to those specs. For now, I'm poor and I'm gonna stick to beating the shit out of it. Probably do an F150 gas tank this summer and throw some 14" ADS coilovers in back.

I’ve been thinking about what to buy once I get a real person job. Something small and fast. The 4Rumner will also be getting gears and lockers once that happens. But I’m starting to look more and more into masters programs so it may be delayed a year

Oh ya? Looking bare up there? I’m kind of exciting to see how the F150 does pulling the 4Runner
