U-Haul broke my trailer plugin socket help fix

(Rant) I was inside paying, and the guy hooking up my trailer broke off my trailer plugin socket. I found it later and addressed it when returning the trailer, but U-Haul never told me they broke it in the first place, lied about the situation and then claimed no possible way for compensation. So now I have to fix and pay for it myself with no sympathy or real apology from U-Haul.

(Question) Any part number, fixes, thoughts or solutions on fixing or replacing this? My truck looks so trashy now I hate it.

When you do this repair - get a hole saw and fit the replacement socket in the bumper skin alongside your license plate. Toyota finally got this through their thick skulls and later model trucks have the improved location. It could be that the later model Tacoma socket is more available than the Honda part (and might even join the existing wiring harness connection).

 

Actually a super easy fix.

you can unplug that damaged part from the main wiring harness from the truck.

From there you can work on repair on a bench or table.

That's not how that works. You can definitely go after them for it, but it might take more work than replacing it yourself.

 

Surprised your local shop didn't step up for you. I'd contact corporate and lodge a complaint. Then yelp the shop with a review!

 

Ha ha your bumper was already a mess and the trailer plug mount bent way back and poor guy just went to plug it in and it fell apart - not their fault.
Replace and move up into the bumper. They sell bumpers too and you must have broken that left taillight when you bent the bumper up.
Even looks like the safety chain hoop is way bent up and that takes a hard hit on rocks to do - been there.
OEM 7-pin socket is called "wire frame No3" #82169-04010 and about $300 and online at McGeorge about $200 or do cheap replacement mentioned above.
Duct tape will hold it all together as looks like all the main body is intact and probably still works - just a water/mud issue. Temp just disconnect the whole thing up behind the bumper.

 

(1) I think I got this replacement socket at a Pep Boys - years ago. Maybe $25.
(2) Measured the diameter and bought a hole saw to match. Got (4) stainless capscrews and nuts for mounting.
(3) Checked out where I would be able to pierce the bumper skin - clearance on the backside. Don't cut something else doing this!
(4) Used the original Toyota pigtail for the wiring harness / bundle.
(5) Got info and figured out which pin is which for the 7 pin connector. Tested functions with a meter.
(6) Bolted the socket solid to the truck and secured the backside wiring bundle.

Ate up a Saturday morning....... but still in great shape and working fine. I used some of the original bracket mount to hang a skinny LED backup light - haven't knocked it off yet.

 

Agree, just waiting for the next person to use it.

 

Request to see the pictures of the trailer connection after hook up.
The dealer should have taken pictures of the connection. U-Haul requires that a photo be taken of the hook up BEFORE the customer leaves the parking lot. They literally have to upload them to the U-haul server.

 

Why not do damage to the guys car who did it?
Throw a piece of ceramic from a spark plug at a side window (not covered with free replacement by insurance like a windshield)

 

For real though, they did you a favor

Toyota fudged up putting the light hookup so low, I’ve caught mine on crap, and it collects snow and ice and salt like a mother.
Now you have a chance to relocate it to a better spot
