UFC 129: St-Pierre vs. Shields

GSP is the champ and is clearly undisputed. I also put money on the man and was obviously cheering him on, as I have during his current reign of terror inside the octagon since rising to the top and well before.

However, he almost lost that fight. Whether he was hurt or not isn't the issue, we're talking MMA - the goal is hurt the other person for a 'W'. All fighters go in with that strategy, albeit not from accidental illegal eye contact, but you cannot make excuses and shields did not scratch his eye on purpose. I remember between rounds 4 - 5 GSP saying his eye was hurt and he couldn't see. Couldn't tell who said it but I think it was Greg Jackson ... something to the effect of "well, you have to suck it up" cause there was another round. The alternative would be to forfeit and that was just was not an option.

The man is bad ass and obviously tough as nails to boot, but that nose was way smashed up. If it could have gone another round, there might be another champion right now but there's always a huge bag of 'what ifs' after any fight.

The only point i'm trying to make is, people shouldn't be blaming GSP for not finishing this fight, they should be blaming Shields.

 

^ Valid point. If anyone ever had an opportunity it was Shields and he just couldn't finish it. Just the same, props to GSP because he stuck with it. Between rounds it was obvious that he was way way way concerned about his eye and as said before, Jackson just told him to not worry about it, you have 1 other eye and go beat him with 1 eye.

It brings to mind Couture/Gonzaga with Randy fighting and winning with a broken arm. There are many other examples of fighters doing the same. Then again there are many examples of injured fighters quitting or loosing and then saying it was due to a bad back (Tito?).

Another one is when Chuck broke Franklins arm with a kick and still Franklin knocked him out. (I was at UFC 115, it was unreal)
