Truck's gross is closer to 5300... 3800 is curb weight spec.

towing over mountains would concern me with no brakes on trailer for a dude with now experience. might be cheaper in the long run to have the car shipped for a grand. plus the shipper takes the liability.also the road on a long drive always has the potential of say an animal jumps in front of you. you have to know how to handle that when your carrying a load.

have you considered the cost of trailering vs driving both vehicles?
lower fuel economy+cost of rental may be more than just driving the car?

    +1... depending on travel plans.

There are some areas that I am simply not comfortable stopping for the night, particularly near the border.
Trailering the 2nd vehicle provides the option to have a 2nd person drive to get to a better area, or even to drive straight through.

OTOH, if moving alone, or the 2nd person is not comfortable with long trips, then trailering or commercial moving is the only option.

Wow! My first vehicle was a B2200. I can't imagine towing something that big with one. 85HP FTW! And people think the 159HP of the new 4 cyl. is underpowered?!

I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
oh yes, we reinforced the bed frame, the bumper and made a heavy riser hitch to left the nose up on the trailer. just had to take it slow going up fancy gap but went all the way to canton ohio.

Don't think OP was going to loading it to GVWR. And if he did, the combined weight would be 8850 lb. That's too much for the truck's brakes to handle.

Gross combined with the towing package is 11,100, but I agree that it's really pushing it without trailer brakes.

As far as GVWR... GVWR is only about 1300 to 1500 above curb weight.
It doesn't take much to get a Tacoma to GVWR. It really is a half-ton truck.

We're saving about $300 or so in fuel. My original thinking was to might as well tow it if we can, to save money (tight right now).

Re mountains...I'm avoiding the mountains in SoCal by takin the 10. What other mountains are.on the route on the 10? Any decent detours to avoid these spots. The GF is not an option as a second driver.

Re the border...not worried about it. El Paso is really the only night we'll be there, I'll take precautions. Plus I'm strapped.

We're taking 9 full days, with 3 full days of no driving in Phoenix, Beaumont and New Orleans. The legs are relatively short avg of 6-8 hrs each.

PS Not going to be in a wheelchair but thanks for the thought.

So how do I handle an animal?

Engine Braking is good advice. Slow thru the hills good advice. Cross the chains to catch the hitch. I'll do some more research but what other actual towing advice is out there. I'll have 8 hours of experience by the time I get to Phoenix...gotta learn sometime.

My GF just had a pretty dammed good idea. I can back the car off the dolly in any hilly/mountainous areas and she can drive it. Pretty much eliminates the trouble with hills. Why the hell didn't I think of that?

I towed a 6x12 enclosed trailer no ?s asked by them from Orlando to LA. Yea at times a full 6x12 over powered my truck but I still made it home safely. I even told them I have a small apartment I would be putting in there. Guess every employee is different or something

Only For insurance purposes is it important for them to know. I would lie at my own risk

Seriously, you won't be saving that much fuel.
If the 626 gets the same or better mileage as the Tacoma, you might actually save a bit of fuel because your towing MPG is going to fall into the low teens.

I'll take hitting the animal over swerving to avoid it and jack knifing into oncoming traffic or going over a cliff anyday. Besides, that shit is equal danger whether towing or not and can happen on short trip just as easily as on a long trip. Stupid pedestrians jaywalking and inattentive non-yielding vehicles would be same danger potential in urban area too. The scenario of panic stop/avoidance is not limited to rural places or only when towing.....................and do what Downey says above.

My camper weighs 3,000# if I forget to connect the trailer plug (no trailer brakes) I know right away it's back there and that is a normal stop. At speed you can get into a shit real fast with that kind of weight and no brakes. If you insist on renting a dolly go to UHaul with a friends full size pickup and take the dolly back to the house they will not rent one to you if you show up with a compact pickup of any sort.

I ran into a similar situation a few years ago with my 06 Double cab 4x4 V6. I wanted to trailer a 73 Firebird. U-Haul wouldn't let me, but they would let me dolly it. It went very smooth.

Sorry but this is just not true. As said in previous posts, they will rent the dolly to tow a corolla and many other cars.

Illegal in California (yeah, I know:eek:) and it's not safe in my opinion. This is not a 3/4 ton with massive brakes.
