Ran Lockwood trail Saturday afternoon with @eon_blue. We posted up camp at the base of Miller Jeep Trail for the night and then went up it in the morning. Got myself high centered again on my mid skid and had to get pulled back off it. Added a bunch of new pin stripes and gouged a few wheels.

Trying to get back in to photography along with video editing. Got stuck for an hour last night with no cell service while waiting for a wreck to be cleared up about half a mile down. Everyone's lights were off, not a cloud in the sky, and some beautiful stars. Unfortunately my skills are still lacking but a bit of quick editing made them pop a little.

Get a tripod (doesn't have to be a fancy one) and you can do some really cool night shots by setting the camera up for long exposures, anywhere from 10 seconds to as long as the battery will hold the shutter open. Super easy to do, just set the camera up and open the shutter for an hour or so...crack a beer and hope the shot doesn't get fucked up, lol.

Stuff like this (not my shot but these are really easy to do)...this was probably an hour long exposure, maybe less...

If you point at the north star for your shot, the stars appear to circle around it...pretty cool.

To get structures and things in the shot to come out and not look dark, you can "paint" them with a flashlight for a few seconds or so (depending on how bright the light is and how long your exposure is)...that's how those buildings came out lit up in that shot above.

depends, sometimes there can be ambient like in the tent, but usually if the truck is visible its because someone flashed some light over it while the shutter was open

Yep, that's one way to do it anyhow. You can use anything to light up the your subjects in the dark when doing long exposures...flashlights, headlights, candles, LED lights, firework sparklers, lighters, etc. The weaker the light the longer you'll have to keep the subject lit by it to make it show up in the shot, especially if you're doing a really long exposure. Also, subjects that move are going to come out blurry of course...unless you hit them with a strobe light (really strong flash) which can freeze the image of them onto the exposure.

Best way to figure out what works and what doesn't is to just play around with long exposures and different lights until you find what works...one of the upsides to the world of digital.

ARE Shell. Pelfreybilt front bumper. hi-clearance rear bumper w/swing out. Rigid light bar/fog lights/reverse lights. Pelfreybilt front skid. Home/hand made slidders. DR front coilovers. Camburg UCA. AllPro Expedition leaf pack w/u-bolt flip and Timbren bump stops. 285 70-17 on stock rims with Spider Trax wheel spacers. EBC slotted/drilled rotors with green pads.
Just a small lantern light inside the tent is all you need. Nothing super bright or else it will blow out your night shot and be way too bright. Same with the light painting. Too much light painting will blow out your picture. Experiment with just a quick flash with your flashlight of different time intervals with the light on. With a 30sec exposure, just a quick sweep with the light is all that's needed. Also experiment with those tiny colored led key chain lights. They will add some sweet colors to rock formations and trees at night. It's all about experimenting and figuring out what works for you. And yes on a tripod.
