Interesting trivia- they were originally inspired by BMW 1600’s/2002’s.

I’ve had a 1990 Mazda b2200 and it had like 85 hp…. It was an interesting adventure trying to go up hills with weight in the back.

    My ‘68 1600 1.6 4 cylinder BMW had 84hp, and the same model year with a 2.2L 4-cylinder had more than 100Hp.

Oh man, that was my first car in high school. My dad gave me a set of craftsman tools, metric of course, and the car came on the back end of a tow truck. it cost $800 and needed bodywork and an engine rebuild. He said congratulations here’s your new car, now learn to fix it.

Sadly no. :( I have some on super 8mm film.

Never give a teenager a race worthy vehicle, we used to put a camera on the front of it and race up in the mountains. It’s amazing how teenagers survived those years.

The Mazda pickups looked good in those years, I don’t know why the early Datsuns looked so funny.

My dad had a corona in highschool/post secondary, my grandma had a corolla in the 70s 80s. Both were hassled for their choices, but both cars had so few problems.

My dad went domestic for 20 years after the corona finally returning to a couple of 3rd gen 4runners realizing his mistakes.

Oddly, its not why I ended up with Toyota as a brand, but it didnt hurt.

My best friends Dad, back in the day, purchased a 1966 when they first came into the US. A Brown, Bronze color, manual 3 speed. My friends Dad became a traveling salesman handing out brochures all over Calif!
My friend and I hated it because his traded in a 58 Mercury station wagon with I believe a 390 engine. That wagon could blow the doors off most cars on the road.

Looking at that large beautiful empty engine compartment with room to change the plugs and for other maintenance, but I see no strut mounts? What was the front suspension, leafs and a solid axle? My 1600 had MacPherson struts and you could see the upper strut mounts on top of the fenders.

Let's not forget what a milestone it must have been when the first Electric Wipers came out making the Vacuum ones obsolete.
I had a 52 Military Jeep as my first vehicle at 16. It had the original vacuum motors, worked great until you had the pedal to the floor trying to pull a grade in a snow storm. They came to a full stop, then you used the little handle that was part of each motor to manually run the wipers. It helped to have a buddy in the passenger seat to operate his side.
Ah yes! The good old days.

Looks like it had upper and lower control arms with coil springs, so the shock mounts didn't need as much vertical space as MacPherson struts.

Did you catch the Mopar oil filter in the spacious engine bay?

So many folks forget or never knew the Corona. Growing up, we had one that was slightly newer than this (somewhere in the 1973-75 range, I think). It was both the first import that my father owned, as well as the first car he bought new. Unfortunately, I never got to drive it as it got totalled in an accident before I was even close to getting my license.

My old man bought two imports when he first moved here. An 81 Wolfsburg Jetta and an 83 Land Cruiser 60.
