OK, I got the filter from the link. How do I take it apart and get the foam filter out - I don't want to F up $1400 - do I take just the center screw out ? Do I put a knife or flat screwdriver in the crack and pry the top off ? Do I have to take the 5 or 5 screws out ? Thanks for any help, links and or instructions.

    yep..
You got it. Center torx screw out. And the top half separates. There's a gasket between the two halves that may give you resistance, but it'll come apart. Just hold the bottom half as well while you pull/pry the top off.

The foam will pull right out. I'd also clean up any debris/dust from the inside.

The cap on the outside where the new filter goes will pop off with a bit of prying with a flat screwdriver (tabs break easy so be careful if you want to preserve it to return stock config)

I think if you can wedge a few screwdrivers or something to lift up those tabs it might go without breaking any of them. I will say once one tab breaks it comes off nicely

    No

The stock foam "filter" disintegrates and falls into the impeller, destroying the impeller and clogging lines and valves in this most unnecessary of systems.

Interestingly enough my 3rd gen has a cover over that pump. Looks like there is foam in it to create a sort of gasket around the intake snout so that air can only come up from underneath.

I think I'm going to replace mine with a Uni filter as well, but I'll be interested to see if there are any differences inside as well.

Mod completed. Took 5 minutes. Used T25 torx screwdriver. Just wrangled off the front cap -- no flathead screwdrivers needed.

Anybody have issues pulling the cover off this pump? Not the one that screws in, the one that covers the whole assembly. I see one tab and that's it. No matter how hard I pull it won't come off

There's 3 total tabs. Only one of them is actually visible from the outside, the other two you've gotta feel under the cover because there is an internal "ring" they are on, where it attaches to the pump itself.

Did you have to pull wicked hard after pulling on the tabs?

No, once the tabs are released it pops right off- but it's hard to get all 3 to pop at the same time so you sorta wiggle it. It's one of those things where when you got 2 free, the last one is a bitch to pop open because it has tension on it, and if you try to ease it back down one of the 2 freed clips pops back into its slot. :annoyed:

There is a reason mine sits on the garage floor in a cardboard box of assorted parts.;)

Alright, I'm sure I'll get it eventually. I'm trying to get it off and am always worried when dealing with plastic as I am afraid of breaking something. Especially this high dollar emissions bull shit.
