True but they look a lot cleaner with the cover back on.

Just get the 1 tab too release and then pull up the two other sides at one time with both hands and the cover will pop off.

Just ordered mine. Thanks for this info. No problems yet on my 13 and would like to keep it that way! Wonder why Toyota didn't just run a rubber hose to the air box to pull filtered air from behind the engine air filter. That's how the one of my Corvette is setup and literally never hear about failures.

The black cover you take off when doing the mod (the one held in by clips, NOT the single torx screw one) do you leave that off or put it back on?

Installed the uni filter on mine today. Stock foam filter was still in good shape.

That fan sure is louder at start-up without that foam dampener inside...
My piece of foam was covered in long white cat hair BTW.

Did mine a couple of weeks ago. It took about 20 minutes. Just pull up and wiggle the outer cover and it pops off without too much trouble.
Like others have said, remove the stock foam piece under the second cover. This new filter replaces the function of that.

Not sure if you did mod yet but I think I ended up using a Phillips or flat head screw driver and it worked fine on the Torx screw

I have a 4 Banger & my air pump doesn't have the plastic over cap. The pump is also located up near the back of the grill /headlight area. I was a little worried about rain water getting sprayed onto the UNI filter ,so I made a splash guard out of a spray paint cap . won't hurt but it might help.a UNI.jpg

Foam breaks down and slowly disintegrates when it dries out. Foam filters need lubricant in order to help catch debris and keep the foam flexible. This isn’t anything new. That’s why they have foam filter lubes. If one was to just maintain that foam filter by cleaning and lubing every 3 yrs or so, that filter should work fine and never dry out ,crumble and ruin the secondary air pump. It takes 5 min. or less to check. I just massaged a little fluid film in the foam and stuck it back in. FF is a non petroleum based so it won’t dry out the foam and we all know it never dries. Put a little in a baggie, put the foam filter in and work it in. You don’t need no stinking filter from Amazon. Or go buy some foam filter lube.
