Have owned several diesels from VW TDis to PowerStokes. I'm all for diesel. I think a cool set up would be a really small diesel with hybrid electric....basically using the diesel as a generator/range extender for the electric.

I'd be happy to pay extra.

I'm not as informed on the technology as you probably (not knowing too much about F1) though I've read some high level stuff about some of the tech having been introduced a few years ago. Several different systems were discussed in one arrival.

I was pretty fascinated with some of the plain & simple stuff like a 2nd free spinning "fly wheel" (for lack of the actual term) where a balanced weight spinning at high rpm where its energy had been gained through otherwise waisted or excess energy could be used intermittently...simply, seemingly inexpensive & could be reliable thigh not providing continuous power.

Others systems powered by otherwise lost heat are great too I'm just not as familiar. But thermal efficiency of recip engines being what it is, it seems much can be gained.

The current F1 powerplants are a 1.6L turbo V6 hybrid , the hybrid power is harvested by 2 different motor generating units ( MGU ) , the MGU-K harvests kinetic energy under braking , the MGU-H harvests heat energy from the exhaust gasses in the turbo . All of the current engine manufacturers , Mercedes , Ferrari , Renault and Honda are pushing to develop this technology to move it to their road cars in the near future . The current spec cars are using 30% less fuel than the naturally aspirated V8's did , and are producing over 900bhp , making them comparable in power to the V10 era

IMHO Diesel and Electric engines are the future. Gasoline engines seems to be at their limit of power and efficiency.

I am all for Diesel engines, I think gasoline engines, just like bi-planes will be extinct in near future.

Nice read, thanks for the link.

I hadn't really given much thought to peak power produced vs. actual power used/generated over a specific track or road course. It's cool that even if the peak power isn't quit as high, more is available cumulativly over a road course. I did a little extra search & reading and it's hard to believe the tech doesn't already exist in a wider use.

I'm all for extracting more from less!!

I dunno. VW Dieselgate has really ruined diesel's reputation as an acceptable alternative to gasoline for the regular car buyer.
