I saw that, but they went form non-jbl speakers. Do you think the ones used in that application is better than the stock jbl?
    thanks!

Is OEM Audio any better than JBL? http://oemaudioplus.com/toyota/tcd1600/ The JBL sounds Ok, not as good as I hoped. EVen when I fade to back, sounds like all the sound is coming from the front tweeters.

The JBL speakers are still inferior to pretty much any aftermarket speakers. They are paper cone and tiny(yes I know there neodymium) magnets. I'll see if I can find the pics of them I found.

Yes, I definitely want to replace them. They rattle the door and the side mirrors. Sounds awful, even after adding dynamat Maybe too low OHM? Yes, they produce a lot of bass, but not good bass if that makes sense.

There is no clarity from them, and I hear adding tweeters in the dash really makes a difference, I haven't swapped mine.....yet but will

In reality what are you looking to do? Do you want a well rounded sound, do you want to vibrate the mirror of the car in front of you? In my rock warrior (last decent system I put together) I had infinity perfect components up front and added an infinity basslink behind the rear seat, had the knob mounted in the little cubby below ac controls, I could turn it up when I wanted, and basically match the music I listened to. Idk yet what I'm gonna do with the taco but it will definitely be for more clarity and fuller range, maybe small powered sub under the seat but nothing major..... Guess I'm getting old.

I had the JBL in my second gen and non-JBL in my third gen. I replaced my Tweeters with the Subaru plug and play Kickers and I think it already sounds slightly better or at worst just as good than my old JBL. Adding the Kickers to the rest makes the system much better in my opinion. All 6 speakers can easily be replaced for less than $250.

Ok, I'm going to upgrade the front speakers. I may stay with jbl brand, just a better pair of 6x9s Hopefully the stock jbl amp will power them nicely.
Do you all think the stock jbl tweeters should be replaced as well?

Yes, I would replace those before I replaced the 6x9's. Pretty sure the factory tweeters are just paper as well, a decent set of dedicated tweeters would be a big upgrade.

What I learned today from a crutchfield Rep when asking how to upgrade my wife's 09 Camry SE JBL system was that the ohms with the JBL was 2 ohms and that installing a 4 ohm after market speaker would reduce the volume. Not to many options with the JBL system because there are not to many after market 2 ohm speakers. I don't know what the ohms are for the Tacoma JBL's.

I'm pretty sure I've read on here before that the Tacoma jbl is 4 ohm

any updates on this. anyone upgrade the speakers in the jbl system? I'd like to do the tweeters and front doors without adding an amp in, I would think the head unit could handle that.

It can handle it, but depending on the speakers may not drive them efficiently. You could get lower volume, or just not improve the sound. You want the lowest RMS you can find, speakers that are intended for OEM upgrades. Crutchfield carries the JL Audio C1-690, which seems like a good choice.

FWIW, I made my own tweeter mounts on my last 2 trucks using metal straps and used the strongest 3M tape to secure the tweeters. Worked awesome to keep them in the original mounting location.

As far as resistance, if the tweeter and woofer are wired in series and are both 2 ohm, total resistance is 4 ohms. I am not sure if the OEM ones are wired in parallel or series, though. Whether going from 2 ohm to 4 ohm will decrease the volume depends on speaker efficiency as well.

Bottom line is that you probably won't make it worse.
