Only upgrade if it's a TRD PRO.

Don't do it. I went from a 2010 TRD Sport to a 2017 TRD OR. I only put about 5k miles on it before I couldn't stand the truck anymore and traded it for a 2015 TRD Pro (posted about it here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/trd-pro-tx-baja-official-thread.360056/page-111). Granted, it was mainly due to the automatic transmission BUT I will say a few other things:

    1) The 3.5l sucks. For real. It's not like I am just a 2nd gen fanboy. I owned one for 5k miles and it was balls. The 4.0l is a way better engine for these trucks.
    2) Don't expect more than 1mpg better gas mileage by going to a 2017.
    3) The 3.5l sucks even more if you put larger tires on it because at has worse low end torque.
    4) The push button start and added sound isolation is nice.

I don't think it is worth paying that much money for the "upgrade" because the drawbacks outweigh the benefits IMO.

7 grand is most of my mods to my 15. I wouldn't want to start over.

7k makes for an easy NO.

If it was a few grand, then it would be in the, should I or shouldn't column. At the end of the day I think a few too many people write off the 3rd gen too quickly , but you cant go wrong with keeping the truck you currently own.

In my opinion the gen2 has a better power train for a work truck.
However I would be very interested in seeing results if you posted this in the gen3 section.
If you already did and I missed it then disregard.

Problem is, he'll post in 3rd gen and the disgruntled minority that hate the 3rd gen will poison the well. For every dude that hates the 3rd gen, guaranteed there are 10 that love their trucks and dont post on TW.

I will buy the heck out of a 3rd Gen, but not until they've had a few years to ID the bugs. I wouldn't pay $7K to just move from a 15 to a 17.

Against my recommendation of not buying a new model on its first year, my dad bought a 4x4 2016 and hasn't had problems yet.

Nope, don't sink money into a depreciating asset, but that aside the 3.5 liter engine is unimpressive. There is no low end power, you have to get into the 5-6K rpm to feel any power but who drives that like that everyday. I like the 2nd gen 4.0 better for these trucks. I drove the 3rd gen in a manual for what it's worth and it felt lack luster. I liked it till I drove it.

    Too few to list.
If you really want a 2017, go look into a 4cyl 4x4 manual. Aside from that, I wouldn't call it an "upgrade".

To the OP. Try to secure a test drive for a whole day. This will help wear off the novelty of a new vehicle and you will be more honest with yourself. Upon returning the truck and driving home in your 2015, notice how easy it is to access true power as you accelerate away from the dealership.:D
