Guy I met on Facebook posted about needing some one to help in his upholstery shop. It's a legit business and the guy is nice and cool as can be.

Best part is, he has an ext. cab toyota pickup. GREEN.

But, he said hes looking for someone who wants a career. Not a job, he said he will train me and teach me everything he knows. His shop is around an hour away but in a couple months he's moving around 20 mins from me. He's a really cool guy but

Is upholstery doing that good at the moment, and for a while....i don't want to put my life into this and then he has to shut down

Well, there will always be room for someone who does quality work.

Look into his background. How long has he had his business. How is he getting new customers. Does he seem like he knows how to run a business.

Are you passionate about a career doing this? It's a lot more than just replacing what's there. The good guys can design from the ground up, stick to budget and still make a profit. Do you see yourself being that person?

I've done bits as a mechanic. It's not easy work. Really hard on your hands.

He's been in business since 2010, he had a rough spot 3 years ago with business but he pulled back through. He said right now business is booming and he doesnt see a slow year happening anytime soon.

I never really saw myself doing anything really, i think my average job lasts about 2 months ranging from a year to couple weeks. Tired of the jobs and the i got to thinking, I'm 19 without a college degree. I need a career, nothing appeals to me accept things that only pretty much happen with experience or degrees, like mechanic

If you aren't really attached to anything and it seems interesting then it might be worth your while to check out. You job hop every couple months so you're not really or anything.

That's a problem. I mean like if you want to be self sufficient.

Well, self realization is a good start.

There is absolutely no reason everyone needs a degree. A trade can be a very rewarding and fun career. And there's nothing wrong with multiple trades/careers. And there's nothing wrong with going to school as an adult, if that's what you decide to pursue someday. I started college at 27 and graduated at 35. Had been working full time since graduating trade school at 19. Did all my school at night, wife, 2 kids, 3 moves, 2 houses. Graduated with honors.

If you are interested in upholstery it can be rewarding. Not sure how it pays, and don't expect to be the go to guy on Overhaulin or West Coast Customs anytime soon. :D

    Couple of other thoughts.

Check out plumbing. They always have work, they have a trade career, and they can be handsomely paid.

Check out land surveying if you like being outside, and surveying for things like power lines and new major roads if you like being in remote areas.

Check out the power company. Lots of variety, good pay, everyone wants electricity.

    Check out AC/heating technician work.

Lastly, check out MikeRoweworks @ http://profoundlydisconnected.com/foundation/ Poke around and see what you find there.

I will say this. Be prepared to continue your education if you want to be successful at anything. Trade school, technical school, specific classes at a junior college, etc. You will need to learn things to help you be the most successful, if you ever want to be a leader or have your own business. Not the same as a college degree, but learning is a lifelong process. And some of it comes better and faster in the classroom.

PS, no trade is cushy. It's all hard work, sometimes dirty, sometimes miserable. But it's part of life. The hard times will pass in the pursuit of success.

In my former life as a mechanic I did it off and on. Replacing seat covers, seat heaters, fixing door panels. Still do a few leather conversions for myself or friends time too time.

Basically nothing compared to what you'll be doing.

If you pass on the opportunity and someone else excels. How will you feel knowing it isn't you.

Your young. Got plenty if time.

    Go for it.

If it all goes to shit you will at least have another hobby/skill to make side money with.

Once that 1 st customer becomes apologetic at the work you do, you will be hooked.

Nothing beats a customer that is amazed at the work you do.

1 good review gets you 2 more customers.

1 ecstatic customer gets you 10 more customers.

Nothing beats producing something that people can see and feel.

When they thank you and give money, it rocks. When they give you money and tip you 2x what you quoted, you won't care what career you are in. You will only look for that next super happy customer.

How old is the guy? Do you think he's looking for someone to sell the business to down the line?

I think he's somewhat looking for a manager type role down the line, so he can just go home and do whatever owners do:p
