    So a bit of update:

This morning, I noticed going into reverse was nearly impossible. Required force and both hands. After a drive, I noticed that my shifter had wobble in each gear I engaged, including neutral. I can only assume that the adapter down below has come loose. I took it to a shop when I got it installed - 3 months ago. What do you guys think?

Just a note - it’s parked in the garage. I’m driving it back to the shop on Monday. I have my concerns of driving it further like this at the expense of damaging something else.

May have already been mentioned but URD seems to have updated their instructions to recommend using the studs to make things easier. https://cdn1.urdusa.com/urd/wp-cont...RD-Shifter-Installation-3rd-Gen-Tacoma-V6.pdf

Also, are there any folks with 2017 models that didn't have a heck of a time installing the new ball? Looking back in this thread, it seems most of the folks that had issues getting the new ball on had 2017 models. Just curious as I have a 2017 TRD Pro.

If you mean the extension for the stock ball that engages the shift shaft, it's tight but not impossible. It needs to be tight or it can cause movement/flex wihch can lead to a fatigue failure. You just need to get it lined up and on straight. I used a block of wood to tap it into place, but I had to do the same thing on my 2014 when I installed it. Definitely use loc-tite on the set screw and get it as tight as you can without stripping the hex. I don't know if the directions call for it, but also peen over the top thread in at least one or two spots to physically prevent the set screw from backing out.

Also, yes I had heard they switched to studs which would make things easier. Even so, I managed to get it installed (and removed to replace it with the Core shifter) without bending any sheet metal.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. How hard would it be to revert back to stock after going through the URD installation process? Removing the spacer and all that (even using rtv sealant) seems to not be too hard. I'm more wondering how hard it will be to remove the ball extension if I ever wanted to revert back to stock.

Getting the spacer out is no more difficult than installing it. When I swapped to the CORE I didn't even bother removing the ball extension. If you grease it before installing it shouldn't be too bad, but there's not much real estate to use a puller or something on it. When I removed it from my '14, I think I used 2 pry bars to get it off.

Does the RTV sealant separate fairly easily? That would be biggest concern getting the spacer out.

I used Black Permatex on my 2017, and it wasn't too bad getting it off, but it didn't just pull apart. Since it's got dowel pins, you can't just smack it with a hammer to get it to break free. If you expect to be removing it in the future, I would take a grinder with cutoff wheel or a hack saw and cut some slots in the back and sides of the spacer. That will give you something to grab onto and pry on if necessary.
