The dowel pins just allow for alignment as the bolts go on right? They can't provide that much stability on top of a bolt could they?

they just position it, it's the bolts that hold everything together.

Ok, so I tackled mine today. I still could not get enough leverage on those front bolts to remove them so I used some tin snips and cut the tunnel in two places and folded a section back. Once I could access them it was so much easier.
The c-clamps did not form a complete circle around the shifter and getting the urd shifter ball onto the stock shifter ball was tough. I ended up having to line it all up and tap it over the stock ball with a rubber mallet. The urd ball goes on far enough to be able to see the c-clamps through the set screw holes, mine came about 1/2 into the set screw hole. Tightened the set screw as much as I could And secured them.
The dowel pins were stuck in the transmission and would not come out. I just placed the spacer onto the transmission and then set the shifter assembly on top of the spacer without dowels. I tightened all the bolts and replaced the shifter boot. The front part of my boot had a small gap and did not sit flush with tunnel. I'm not sure why they used bolts in the back and plastic fasteners up front. I used some caulk to fill in the gap.
Engaging the gears is easy with the exception of reverse. You really have to shove that thing over with force. It helps to get a "running start" so to speak. Put your hips into it. I hope it will break in over time.
The distance saved on the shifter throw is awesome and it feels more like my sports car now. The old shifter had a 5" throw from 1st to second and the urd has a 3.5" throw.

    very nice.

the force needed to get to reverse is concerning. Someone earlier in this thread was already suspect of the URD two piece design and its integrity.

I guess time will tell if it will hold or not. I'm currently working on a plan to never drive in reverse.

Got it out and drove it today for the first time after the install. I gotta say I love this truck much more now. This is how the shifter should be!

Any other reviews of this before I pull the trigger myself? Positive or negative. I think there were a couple others in the thread that had purchased or were in the process of install and encountered issues..

That design is used by URD and LCE for their short shifters. Although I am sure changing out the entire assembly is stronger i.e. TRD short shifter. Both of their designs being two piece one would have to assume they did their research, testing, and development.

Giving suspicion on a product they dont own and never used.
I had this on my Xrunner for 5years and it never once had a problem. The only issue that ever came up back in the 2nd gen days was the rubber insulation inside the shifter arm itself wore out and it got sloppy all over. Never really heard anyone with any problems with the kit itself. This design is the same exact setup as the 2nd gen was. It is pretty much tried and true for the last 9 years or so since its been out

After driving mine for a few weeks the reverse seems to be much easier now. I'm guessing the truck just needed some break in time on the springs.

I am currently stuck at the C Clamp stage.. Cant seem to get the new ball over the old one.. Wondering if I do indeed need to rubber mallet them on there.. I ran out of time so I had to abandon and put my stock set up back together... Anyone have this same problem?

Yes, you will need to hold those c clamps in place and then use a rubber mallet to seat the new ball onto the shifter assembly. I used a little bit of grease to help the process along and it seated well with a few hits. Good luck!!

Not that I recall. Just make sure to use locktite on those set screws and secure them in place by using a small punch like in the directions. Reverse will be really tight and will require some "slapping" but you get used to it. Let me know how it turns out. I love the difference it made.

Ive been loving this shift upgrade since the day it came out. For those who are concerned about additional effort required to get into reverse, try a weighted shift knob at the same time, pretty much makes up for the difference in required effort overall so it feels like stock effort with a much shorter and concise throw, and a MUCH more solid engagement. I personally have a flossy grip rod 'Redhead' know weighing in at 400-something grams (couple LBs, its a VERY solid piece). Looks like: http://www.shopflossy.com/products/grip-rod-redhead

i have a 5oz knob on there right now, but i have a mammoth (600g) on order. should be here by 2019 (yeah a little frustrated as i ordered it like 6 weeks ago or something).

i like what you're talking about with the improved engagement... i don't need a shorter throw really, but more solid engagement is great. i just don't want to deal with install issues, not sure if it's worth the hassle.

That was me. I'm sure it works, and I'm sure it's a fantastic product because urd is top notch. But I'd prefer a single piece shift arm replacement if it were available from any manufacturer like trd made on their previous gen 6 spd.
