I received my URD shifter and found a lot more hardware than I was expecting. Instead of using bolts at all four corners, there is the option to use studs and nuts up front. I may attempt to install this weekend. I'm guessing others who ordered this just got four bolts?

That's what I got. I didn't end up using the studs and I can't remember what the two bolts are for. Good luck getting the extension on your shifter. Hope you have better luck than I did.

That must be their solution to the space issue on the front two bolts. Let us know how the studs work out.

Well it's done but it wasn't easy. However I was able to avoid cutting or drilling the transmission tunnel. I did not use the studs, I used the hex head bolts up front and the Allen head bolts at the rear. The trick was to remove the dowel from the right front hole of the transmission with vice grips. Then put the two front bolts through the shifter housing and the URD spacer and slide the assembly forward into place while using one finger to hold each bolt up. Screwing the bolts in is a challenge, I contorted my fat little fingers in there and got them snug, then finished up using both ends of a 13mm wrench just a fraction of a turn at a time.

Installing the extended tip was also a bit tricky. The first time i tried tapping the extension down over the two clamshell pieces, one of them shot out and across the garage. My solution was to put vice grips on the shaft just under where the clamshells needed to be to keep them from getting away. That allowed me to get the extension started, then i moved the vice grips up to the clamshells and gently squeezed them together while tapping the extension on further. When the extension is fully seated, the clamshells are not visible.

I noticed not everyone is removing the shift lever from its housing. Doing so will make things easier, especially installing the extension ball. To remove the lever, pull the rubber boot up. Push down on the inner ring with both thumbs, then turn it counterclockwise and release, it's that easy. Then pull the lever up out of the housing.

You got your extension on further than I did for sure.

Guys with the URD shifter installed. How much higher does it raise the handle vs stock? Obviously throws are shorter but the handle is techncially longer.

I didn't take pre-measurements, but the spacer block is about an inch IIRC. The extension piece is about the same, so I wouldn't see it being more than an inch higher than stock. It's not awkward or cumbersome.

I had a URD for a 2009, and subsequently snapped the shift lever about 5000km later (with about 50,000km on the truck). I now have a TRD short shifter with about an additional 60,000km on it.

Has anyone had a good look at the 2016 compared to the previous generation? Is there any way you could make the TRD shifter work on the new trucks? I'm about to upgrade to a new model and I'm a little gun shy about URD after my prior experience, but I will not be happy without short throws so I need a solution one way or another.

Hmm, interesting idea. I have the TRD shifter in my 2009 X-Runner and now the URD shifter in my 2017 Sport. It should be easy enough to pop both shift levers out to compare them. I wonder if the housing spacers have a different bolt pattern. Those would be a bit harder to compare without removing them. No biggie on the 2nd gen, major pain on the 3rd gen. Maybe once the weather improves and I have nothing better to do. Or give URD a call and maybe Gadget could tell us.

i also had the problem where the c clamps werent fitting around the sleeve and of the urd attachment. i emailed them about it and never got an email back! and they even blocked my wifi from going on their website:confused:. luckily my father in law is a diesel mechanic and was able to bore it out about a 16th of an inch at his shop. not too happy with my experience with them

For anyone reading this, i had a good experience with the URD short shifter.. until it broke while putting it in reverse. I was riding dual sport in the woods with my wife and had packed up headed home for the day when it broke.

Luckily, i had JB weld so i put it on and waited for about an hour. Tried to go from 2nd to pretty much 6th (or 4th if i had to) just to minimize changing gear. As luck would have it, the shifter separated again as i pulled into our driveway.

The shifter (Toyota part) itself broke because i believe it wasnt meant to take the shear/torque. I've since replaced it with the TRD version. Just some feedback for anyone deciding between the two.

edit: I apologize for the sidetrack but i realized i'm missing a center cap for my 17in alloy wheel and if anyone has an extra one, i would be much obliged if you could sell me just the one. Thanks in advance.
