(2001 Tacoma SR5, 4X4 2.7 100K miles) So I'm looking to replace my stock exhaust muffler pipe assy. I want to stay OEM, but did notice that my stock system did start to rust on the exterior within a month after purchasing my truck new back in 2001. I'm really not a fan of going aftermarket changes, so I was considering ordering an OEM muffler pipe assy and coating it with high heat paint before installing to prevent exterior rust. Any thoughts on how this might work out down the road?

One thing you might consider is upgrading the oem to TRD because I think the TRD oem exhaust system was stainless steel? Not 100% sure tho. Might be pricey but best deal is in camel back toyota parts. I am curious of the high heat paint as well. I don't think an engine block or brake calipers get as hot as an exhaust pipe though..

I think it will all burn off close to the motor and cats. The high heat paint would last longer though, but I would just get stainless.

I sanded down the rust and cleaned my tailpipe and then painted it with high heat rustoleum engine paint. Even the very tip of the pipe is back to that rusty color..

I prepped the hell out of my tail pipe then used high heat paint.

Looked awesome at first but after two seasons it turned right back to faded rust.

    Ended up cutting it off.

Thanks for all the input. Is there anything aftermarket stainless steel system without the extra sound? Not a fan of anything race sounding in my 2.7 ltr.

    stock, for now
anything will rust. Just how long you can prevent it.

I had an aero turbine welded on a couple of weeks ago. I painted the fresh welds with BBQ paint (black) and called it a day.

Even "stainless" steel rusts. Especially the lower grades. I bought my truck two years ago and noticed that the exhaust mounts and the flanges to the cats were rusting. So, a couple of months ago I sanded everything down and used Rustoleum High Temp Paint (1200 F) to paint everything from the tailpipe up as far as I could reach with a nice flat black. I plan on applying more coats soon.

I'm trying to be proactive with rust because I had a 2001 Dodge Dakota that I drove for 10+ years that had exhaust and body rust.

I used high heat BBQ paint on mine and it held up for about 3 months. After that all the paint was burnt off

VHT makes header primer and paint capable of 2000 degrees. If you want it to last, you need to rough up the pipe with 80 grit, then prime, cure the primer, then paint, then cure the paint. Do that and it will last a long time.

Just to update since I first started this thread. I finally decided to just go with the stock OEM system witih no paint treatment.
