Yep, some are not bright. You should know to avoid broken windshields is to remove the windshield first and wear protective goggles before pulling stumps in reverse.

I put a shorter strap around a stump in our yard and looped both ends together onto my winch, worked pretty well. I had to dig out some of the root sections to give it something to grab onto but I would imagine same principle would apply if you were pulling it out.

I pulled about a 10 inch stump with my 4cyl prerunner a couple years ago. I dug down to where i could get the strap under and around a couple roots. Put it in low gear and eased it out. It was dead for the most part but was still surprised the little 2.7 could handle it with no problem. Wish i could find the pics.

And we have another one worried about a tow ball.
Have you watched the whole video?
Do You realize they are using a snatch strap not a tow strap? Do you know what the difference is between a snatch strap and a tow strap?

If you watch the whole video the first tow ball took like 20 attempts going full out to break it. Matter of fact they tore the hitch away from the frame before it broke. The rest they cut over halfway into so they would break easier for the test.

I’m not saying it’s good practice to recover a truck using the ball. But that’s not what we are talking about here

I'm not saying you shouldn't use the ball either? In fact, if you look at my post, I didn't say anything about using the ball... at all.... But sure, that definitely qualifies you to assume my standpoint on this.

In fact, I've used the ball to recover a stuck Ford Explorer, while in 4-low. So my suggestion is, if you're going to use the ball, put your truck in 4-low and know your limits.

Why use a come-along when you have a tow strap or chain and a running/drivable vehicle?

Knock the bottom out of a barrel.

    Place barrel over stump.

Start small campfire size fire inside the barrel.

No more stump. No pulling, chopping, cutting or damaging your truck. It's a good opportunity to burn brush and remove a stump at the same time.

Only problem is lots o folks in ‘civilized’ neighborhoods would lose their minds over this. Particularly any with an hoa.

It's not about power. My fj60 probably doesn't have much more than 80 HP at this point. I use a chain so it doesn't stretch. Slack the chain, get the truck moving about 5 mph and clutch in until the weight of the truck tugs the stump. Back up and go again. I wrap the chain around the tow bar. I've pulled about 20 stumps this way.

I park the fj on the street and had to move it to pull this stump. I decided to just use the fj since I had to get it started anyway.

But then you have a full root system and stump underground. If you need to till or turn the soil you're fucked.
