Ditto. Maybe the newer 4.6. Just saw a damn Ram commercial touting 25 mpgs. WTF?

It should be an option for the double cab, my dclb is as big and heavy as my 2005 4 runner.

Not even close. Expect 12-13 in the city and 17 highway. Maybe 18, if you keep the speed at 55.

My 4.7L is full-time 4WD, so it gets 15-16 highway. Which is the same as a friend's 5.7L Tundra. 4.7L is a great engine and has been very reliable, but it doesn't make sense in a Tacoma. If you need that much towing power, get a 5.7L Tundra for the same MPG and a ton more power.

Isn't the Taco a lot lighter than Tundras and Sequoias? Shouldn't this in conjunction with appropriate gearing yield much better mpgs? Probably too slight to be significant. I just think the harmonics of v8 engines produce smoother more linear power. You'd think that with newer tech a small 8 would be perfect. Production costs may factor In As well in small to midsize trucks. Probably cheaper to build v6 than v8?.?.?

Re-read my post. A Tundra is too big to be a daily driver for me.

The advantages of the 4.7 for me would be just for smoothness, its refined nature, and for fun.

If my gas mileage wouldn't be raped, maybe, but the V6 has enough power.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
God no. The mileage in the V6 is bad enough. And it isn't like there's not enough get up and go already.

I'd trade my 2010 4.0L V6 Tacoma for a 4.6L V8 Tacoma in a heartbeat if it comes with a properly geared 6 speed manual or automatic. It would be the ideal sweet spot for the 4k pound midsize Tacoma. It would get 20 mpg easily and would still only require regular unleaded fuel.

The 4.6L V8 is a much more modern, refined and efficient engine. It meets emissions standards as is with room to spare. It has much more useable low end torque without requiring the fuel guzzling tweaks and low gearing that the archaic 4.0L V6 needs to make it work as a truck engine.

No, in my case I went from a 5.4L F-150 to the 2.7L Tacoma. The difference in MPG was one of my biggest considerations, it's night and day. It's also taking some time getting used to stepping on the gas and well lest just say---nothing happens.
The F-150 turned me into a drifting champion, the Tacoma can't spin the tires on a wet road (traction control?).

In the end, the less than exciting Tacoma will be the better choice when gas is pushing $5, then $6 dollars a gallon in the years to come.

LOL I knew someone would see that, those are partial fill ups.
It's not representing the mileage I'm getting, the truck does 99% "city" driving, I'd guess it's getting somewhere around 18 mpg.
The F-150 was 10 mpg actual, I kept track of it when I first got it.

So yes it's a huge improvement, I'm curious to see what the mileage is on the Tacoma when I've got 15-20 records and I get a more accurate MPG.
    Stay tuned.

OK your going to make me tell you why? You asked for it.
Took it from the dealer full, ran it down to 1/4 tank, I didn't note the mileage (was still basking in the new-ness).

I put $40 dollars in it (10 gal) that wasn't enough gas to fill it, ran that for 167.5 miles (16.7 MPG).

The next week I only put 98.7 miles on the truck and filled it with 8.46 gals (11.67 MPG).

That an average of 14.4 MPG. In truth I don't KNOW what the true MPG is, around town there isn't all that much reason to floor it. The window sticker said 18 city/21 highway. I'm an older guy and don't drive to aggressively, so I'd suspect I'm getting close to that.

Time will tell how close to the estimate.

    Is everyone OK now?

Only 18 MPG with the 4-banger?

Sheesh, I get that around town with my 4.0 and slushbox and I ain't that happy with it...

I'd be pissed if I wasn't getting at least 22-23 MPG around town if I had the 2.7

I'd love to see 22-23 mpg city, it would make it SOOOOO much easier to get the wife to see that trading in the V8 Ford was the right move.

I've put less than 20 gallons in this truck in the month I've owned it. It's way to early to see what the true mileage is.

My cousin works for Toyota in CA. Three years ago he and I had this same conversation. Toyota is not going to place any bigger engine in the Tacoma line. They are expending huge effort (read as $$$) to try to stay within the Government requirements for Fleet-Wide fuel economy ratings. No V8 in the future for the Tacoma, and Toyota has already removed a few larger engine options from other lines (like Rav4) to meet the Regs. As far as I know the same thing is happening with Ford on the 150 trucks. Used to have maybe 5 engines to select from, now I think they are down to about 3. Can't get a manual in those guys either from what I was told over turkey yesterday..... The American market seems to be shrinking options/selections available in a whole host of products. Kind of sad.
