I'd suggest it's because the Tacoma doesn't really "need" it. The 4.0 V6 already embarasses the non V8 offerings from GM and Dodge and it's even fairly competitive with their V8 offerings when you look at the actual performance on the road.

Personally, I don't need more engine than what the 4.0 offers. In a larger truck, sure. In a truck the Taco's size, I think the powerplant is darn near ideal.

I've never looked into it but I have to believe a blown V6 is going to net considerably more than an additional 24 Hp and 40 ft lbs of torque. Anybody got the numbers?

I'd be a lot more interested in a fuel efficient diesel engine than a v8.

people buy the tundra because they need the towing/space, like having a big truck, etc. people arent buying the dakota over the ram just because it has a v8 option.

I agree with kahos. I'd take a diesel WELL before a V8. No doubt that the new 4.6 would be an absolute screamer in the Tacoma, but I personally think it would be overkill. I could see if the 4.0 was a dog and you needed the V8 for decent performance, but for the extra upcharge and fuel consumption, you'd be going from a great powertrain to a ridiculous powertrain. Also, who knows how the extra weight of the V8 would impact handling, etc.

I honestly can't imagine a situation where my Tacoma's 4.0 wouldn't be more than enough engine. Well I suppose I could, however, if I were dealing with those loads on a regular basis I'd have opted for a 1/2 ton.

Depends on the MPG, I went to a tacoma to get away from the 10 MPG range I had in my Dodge Hemi.

diesel+cold weather is not a great combo. The more research I Did, the more I decided to avoid it.

With my 2010 V-6 DC, I can't imagine anyone needing more power unless I was pulling a heavy load all the time!!!

No offense but, who cares. This thread is over a year old. And I still see no reason for a V8 in the Tacoma. I'd rather have the "new" 4.0L V6 that's in the 4Runner and FJ.

Who cares how old it is? It was at the top so I replied.

Who cares about a new v6. A v8 still has more low-end peak power, not to mention higher power through the whole band. I didn't need a 425 hp engine in my magnum either, but I got one like that.

You will NOT see a V-8 in a Tacoma unless YOU pay/play to put one in..;)

Diesel will be the WAY .BUT it will be when TOYOTA is ready....Worries about cold weather???? Mercedes and VW have had them in New England since I was a kid ( and diesel was under a buck ;) ) and I have driven "Iron" for the past 25 + years up here...maintain it for the climate it is in;).....

The "noise" you all want can be accomplished by an exhaust and just think how much you save on RR tires owning a V-6/ or 4 banga:rolleyes::cool:......

the stuff i have read have been about larger diesels in 3/4-1ton trucks. you are supposed to let them warm up a bit before driving in cold weather. your gas gels up unless you use additives, cleaning filters often, etc. just what i've heard.

I'd love the 4.6L Toyota just dropped as an option on the Taco. More power than the supercharger with less wear and tear on the engine, mileage as good as the current stock V6. However, I'm not sure what the wear and tear would be like on driveline components if you were really thrashing the engine a lot...

The extra oomph would be nice, but the 4.0L design is very well done. Not only does Toyota have a stout engine in the 4.0L, but they've done an EXCELLENT job in making sure that power reaches the wheels and turns into traction - this truck has a lot less parasitic power loss than many other models, and that counts for a lot, especially off pavement.

I have a 3/4 ton truck with a diesel. The only cold weather operational difference is giving the glow plugs time to warm up. Sometimes, on really cold days, this means waiting 3 or 4 seconds before turning the key. We don't need any additives, no additional filter changes, etc., etc.

We can, however, pull a 30 ft horse trailer without much an impact on fuel mileage. Can't do that with a gasoling engine.

Id sat yes to the 4.7L only because its a lot smoother than the 4.0 and doesn't have the annoying tick tick tick... Wish it was an option

I never had a gelling issue with my truck but I always ran Diesel Kleen in my tank. For one, ULSD is not great at lubricating even though the fuel companies are supposedly adding additives. Also when it got really cold I would just plug in the block heater which was nice because not only would the truck start right away I would also have warm coolant for the heater inside the truck. No waiting for the truck to warm up to blast out some heat out of the heater.

No more 4.7 and since the new 4Runner did not get a V8 option it would be safe to assume the Tacoma's engine choices would be no different.
