I'm still trying to figure this thread out. We're discussing engine swap options for the 3rd gen because people feel it's such a turd that's it's going to need one? Am I understanding this right? o_O

I wonder how similar wiring is between the v8 4 runners and tacomas of similar years. Just like most trucks of the big 3 the wiring and plug locations are there, just have to run wires for the injectors and put in v8 computer.

I don't know that I would go with an aluminum block instead of iron for a truck. The difference in weight doesn't really justify the extra cost. You could build one heck of an iron block for the price of a used aluminum engine.

For the record, I'm actually fairly happy with the engine. A little more power in the lower rpm bands.... It's got plenty up top for a midsized pickup.

If I were inclined to do such a thing, I would start with a 4 cylinder manual trans. No fancy auto that is electronically controlled.

I sort of have in the back of my mind a diesel swap from a Hilux or a 1hz.

I've long considered swapping a Toyota UR Series V8 into a Tacoma chassis. Much of the work has been done, as Toyota inserts the 4.6 1UR-FE in to the Lexus GX 460... Which is the 4-Runner/LC Prado platform. The 5.7 3UR-FE is a nice unit... and the 5.0 2UR-GSE engines are great normally aspirated screamers, producing 416hp and 467hp in the later units... Deep pockets are required to obtain a 2UR.

I didn't think anything like this was possible/allowable for on road use due to EPA and state inspection restrictions. Am I wrong ?

I don’t know I’m getting 11-12mpg and no power out of 3.5l. At these numbers might as well run a thirsty v8 and get some kick out of it.
