I'll try again-what about smog? Subsequent new owners may not have a "smog connection" like you guys seem to have. Wouldn't a v8 fail a visual? I am just curious how this is such a non issue.

in ohio they don't do smog checks. but we do get the fantastic front license plate. Plus, why wouldn't it pass. A tundra does with the 4.7. If you do the swap correctly ie. proper ecu, proper exhaust, etc. it shouldn't be any different.

    From the EPA:

    http://www.epa.gov/compliance/resources/policies/civil/caa/mobile/engswitch.pdf

"For light-duty vehicles, installation of a light-duty eng~ne into a different light-duty vehicle by any
person would be considered tampering unless the resulting vehicle is identical (with regard to all
emission related parts, engine design parameters, and engine calibrations) to a certified configuration of
the same or newer model year as the vehicle chassis, or if there is a reasonable basis for knowing that
emissions are not adversely affected as described in Memo 1A. The appropriate source for technical
information regarding the certified configuration of a vehicle of a particular model year is the vehicle
    manufacturer"

I know this post is old. Just curious if anyone has ever put a Tacoma engine into a FJ?
I have a 2013 Tacoma that's been totaled. Engine is in perfect condition. With 40k miles on it. Thinking about putting it onto an FJ I'm thinking of buying. It has 160k miles on it.

You will need to learn what it means before you attempt the swap. I think the later year FJs came with a 1GR-FE 4.0 that had Dual VVTi (Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence on both intake and exhaust valves), so don't expect it to be a drop in.

The Tacoma only has a Single VVTi 1GR-FE where only the intake valves adjust.

If the 4.7 V8 can fit a 3rd gen 4Runner, the Tacoma shouldn't be a problem as far as fitment goes.

Got that but the fj will be VVT-i
The Tacoma being bewer will be dual VVT-i

Computer and electrical will be different. As far as you wanting to put it in yes it's possible but will not be plug and play if that's what your asking.

Also the torque and go rating for the 4.0 are all different for the fj, 4Runner and Tacoma.

Incorrect. All of the Tacoma 1GR's are single VVT-I. From 2005 to 2015.

Which matches with the '07-'09 FJ's.

It is all plug n play.

So was it just the fj and 4 runner that got dual in the later years? Apparently I didn't even know which 4.0 I have :anonymous:
