Read a stat once that said total production for 2nd gens is something like 60% DC, 25% AC, 15% Regular. That is just from memory though, I could be butchering it so dont quote me on it.

New AC owner here, and let me tell ya... It was a pain in the arse to find a new AC just how I wanted it! The majority on the lot were DC, or 4 cyl AC, non SR5 AC, non prerunner AC, etc...

Ratio of double cab / access cab / regular cab is roughly 55/35/10%.

If Ford, instead of killing the Ranger, offered a lengthened "supercrew" version, it would probably sell almost as well as the Taco.

I guess what I don't get is, 10-20 years ago a DC was rare to non-existant. Did people not have kids, friends and families in the 80's and 90's?

    I have a AC only because a Reg is not available with a 4.0. I also remember turning my nose up at a T100 because I wanted a "smaller truck" ($4000 for a '97 w 140k).

Yeah, I parked the Tacoma next to one today at lunch o_O.

In the '90s, the 1st gen had the DC config. Evidently it sold well enough for Toyota to make it in the 2nd gen. I think the DC Taco simply woo'd a lot of customers who would otherwise be in an SUV or sedan.

Same here. My truck is basically a coupe (offroadster?).

'06 AC here. Don't have any kids and don't plan on having any for a while. I'd keep my truck as an AC as it suits me fine and probably use the money to pick up another car with more seating space instead. Maybe one that's better on gas as well :)

Well if you go back even further... You probably blame it all on the '70's gas crisis.

With gas in such a shortage to the american consumer, the trend was build vehicles smaller and more fuel efficient. If you had a family, you weren't looking to put them in a big truck or SUV-type vehicle that sucked gas...you were probably shopping for a smaller sedan or a station wagon at most. You bought a truck if you *needed* a truck. In fact, I think the reason that Toyota and Nissan's smaller trucks started becoming popular was for this very reason...but they weren't being marketed to people needing to haul their kids around, that's for sure.

Since then, vehicles have been getting progressively larger and more powerful.

It's not just double-cab or crew-cab trucks either. If you think back to the mid-80's, there were only a handful of "SUVs" available (i.e. Cherokee, Bronco, Blazer), and they've literally exploded since then.

Yes and No - Sure gas and insurance crisis of the 70's led to the the wide spread acceptance of small imports ranging from water-cooled Volkswagens to mini Japanese trucks and sports cars.

However the behemoths also lived on. PowerWagons, FXXX, K20s, Wagoneers. These juggernauts of big-block trucktopia also sold VERY well in the 80's - right along side their mini cousins, Hardbodys, Hiluxs, Rangers and S10s.

Yes, in the 90's everything grew - trucks, cars, minivans ect. Safety, Power and ammonites all drove this. However, in the last 10 years there has also been a resurgence of small. The new Explorer is a car-based Crossover, Fiestas, Scion IQs, Voltz, Fits and a dozen other small cars have been extremely successful.

Even as gas prices began to rise and Americans once again showed interest in small cars - trucks continued to grow. Not only that, but the smaller ones are now being killed off. Dakota is gone, and this is the last year for the Ranger and Colorado. I suspect the next gen Taco and Frontier will also be larger.

This isn't just a US trend but a global one. The Hilux is huge and the new Ranger is supposed to be the same size as the F150. The Volkswagen Amarok is also no ballerina.

I don't know, I'm just ranting about nothing I guess. I'm very happy with my AC.

The biggest mistake of my life was buying a 2 door truck thinking it will be years before I have kids. Then I had the truck for 13 years. My advice to you young dudes is get 4 doors. In 5 or ten years things will be different, but your truck just might be going strong and you can't strap a kid to the hood next to your hi-lift.

But I thought the only people that can fit in the back of a AC ARE kids!!

I wish Toyota would offer a regular cab with all the options my AC TRD came with. The economics just don't add up for the automaker though.People have less money too spend so when they do buy they want the best of both worlds. If you need more bedspace you can always pull a trailer.

Still though, how awesome would a Baja edition Regular cab be with the 4.0 turning the desert into dust?
