Fb, surfing the forums and reading threads with lots of pictures, occasional youtubing, etc. Almost anything you can do on an iPhone.
Also lots of maps usage and getting directions, using yelp and other general apps to find things on my weekend adventures.

I don't plan on it. I have no need to stream anything, all my music is on my phone already. Even if I did, I've got unlimited data, so it wouldn't matter. I'd probably get throttled by AT&T, but whatever.

I've used as much as 4 gigs before and I don't use my phone as much as some people I see. Streaming just kills you. Pandora or similar a few hours at work adds up fast. Facebook and other web browsing isn't what adds up. And I'm always on wifi at home so I'm not even using data at home generally.

The way I understand it, it will $40 per smartphone for unlimited talk and text plus an additional shared data plan starting at $50 for 1GB. So minimum you're looking at $170/month. 1GB will probably be used up by your daughter pretty quickly. Streaming video is the biggest hog. I think 2GB probably works out to about 2 hours of streaming audio per day.

Anyone with an existing Verizon unlimited plan looking to upgrade their phone will be forced to change to the new plan unless they buy an unsubsidized phone (full retail value).

I would say that's not necessarily so. If you're downloading stuff or streaming it will. Using an app for TW like tapatalk wouldn't use much data at all (biggest being pictures). It's mostly text.

Browsing with the phone's web browser shouldn't eat up too much either as many sites offer reduced content to mobile phones. Tethering (connecting a computer to your phone to use the phone as a WI-FI hotspot) can chew up data pretty quickly since the computer connected to it will download webpages as standard pages (no filtering).

As others have said, it's streaming that kills the data.

A little of this and a little of that.
Just so everyone knows, the shared plan idea was something I suggested to Verizon back in March. That's when I bought the iPhones my wife & I. I actually thought that we'd be able to share a 2GB data plan and when I was informed it was $30 each phone it was damn near a deal breaker. The salesman convinced me that we'd each use 2Gb a month and probably would be back to upgrade for more data within a month or two. Well, I'm 3 months into this "smartphone" action and we've not used 1GB combined each month. Granted, we're 40+ yr. olds, so streaming U-tube videos isn't my thing and I've got wi-fi at home and work. Hell, the nicest feature of the iPhone is the "Notes" app.
I only got the iPhone because I travel internationally and other than a BlackBerry, this phone flat out works anywhere in the world.

Agreed. I pay $29 each for each phone and get unlimited data. The new share plan would cost me $2 more and restrict my wife and I to 2gb to share and $40 per smart phone.

Old school here; I've never seen the purpose for spending money on internet service twice. But plenty of folks do. Each to there own.

Just to let you know, the shared plan has been in the design and works phase long before you suggested it. Don't feel like it is your fault. Verizon had hinted at it back before X-mas.

I agree! What happened to the days of actually picking up a map and LEARNING how to navigate, or actually making a phone call and SPEAKING to a person rather than texting. God help us if electronic devices suddenly stop working!

:proposetoast: I salute you sir! I did the same thing. My oldest daughter told me that there would be no way she could survive without an IPhone when she was a senior in High School. Interestingly enough when I told her she could have one.....when she got a dang job and bought it.....she realized that she could do just fine without it.....here we are 3 years later and she is just fine. Still alive and breathing....and no IPhone.

I did the plan calculator for shits and giggles and one of these new plans would cost me $20-30 more a month.

I guess I see things different than lots of others. I have always paid for my own cell phone since I was 17. Also paid for my own vehicle, insurance, and gas. When kids cry "I need this... I need that", they need to get a job and pay for it themselves. Not to knock on the way people are raising their children, but I feel I was raised right. If I wanted something more than what was provided, I worked for it. I also feel I had a generally easy life growing up.

agreed. I was the same. If you wanted more than the basics, you EARNED it. Even if it meant doing extra things around the house. Heck, these days I never see kids doing "chores" anymore.

just giving my experience, I do use my phone alot, but generally wifi, non wifi only when im out needing google maps or when im waiting at some random customer service i'll use youtube/netflix/and just over all regular browsing. I do use it for multiple emails of which I respond to immediately. I am constantly over 2gigs. Lucky me I'm grandfathered in unlimited with at&t.

How old are your kids if you're 27 and you're telling them to get a job? LOL

I was grandfathered into the AT&T unlimited data, and my cycle ended yesterday and i've already used 140Mb One gig is 1024Mb so for you guys with a 2 gig plans, with that same daily rate, i bet i'd use about 3-4 gigs a month...mostly emails, text messages, facebook. i'll have to log on and see what i used last month..probably alot tho cause im jailbroken :)
