Welcome @shakyredneck from a fellow Ohioan. We got a few inches of the fluffy white stuff in my neighborhood and the roads were slick coming home tonight.

I ordered my truck without test driving the particular model. I test drove many automatics knowing that I wanted a manual. Dealers around here had a hard time finding manuals and never had one in stock. I did drive my truck before signing any final paperwork. I was satisfied then and more so now.

You will get hopefully get used to many of the new Taco quirks. I understand using the auto in "S5" helps a lot. Some good reading here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/transmission-logic-update-is-on-the-way.430444/page-6

I don't have any issue with throttle input as other members mentioned above, but that may be because I drive with steel toed boots. :D:D

Is this a jerry rig fix or functioning as designed and intended?

What does "clean af" mean too?

My 1997 was a hell of a lot better truck, year for year, than my 2016.

    A hell of a lot.

I wouldn't know about the gas cap holder since I haven't put gas in it yet... Anyhow, I'm not sure about these stupid asses and the troll comments. Appears to be several immature folks on here. I guess I'm going to keep for a while so I ordered the black step bars for it. Maybe once I sell my first gen. And don't have to look at it, all will be good. Btw I have never been a fan of the second gen.

How does Toyota keep selling the POs Tacomas. I am sure glad I got one in 200,000 that is good. I press on the gas, and if I have it in gear and clutch release it goes forward, and if I give it more gas pedal, it goes faster.

Guess it's just the 4 banger to v6 that makes me feel like this truck is good. I wonder if the build one, shut down the line, retool and then build another, this way it's a total crap shoot to if you get one that works or not.

Yes, R is in a bad spot. It is a little harder to go thru the gate to get to reverse, but I have done it a bunch of times. Now I go to 2nd then up to first.

OP- stay on top of the thread if you really want to read folks posts. These threads turn to a shit storm quickly and get locked or removed.

Oh and I ordered my truck with out test driving a manual. I know I wanted a manual, I knew I wanted a midsize truck, and the Chevy sales guy pr try much laughed when I asked him if I could get manual. He seemed more interested in my 09, as he just took one in a few days before a got a deal for his son-in-law on it. That pretty much told me to stay away from the Twins.

Painted grill and rear bumper, Removed all badges and stickers, Tint, OME lift TRD wheels and BFGs on order.
So I have that exact truck. Same color access cab 4x4. I painted the grill and back bumper panels, Got tint, A OME lift from low range off road, Black TRD wheels and BFG KO2 and all is right with the world. Love it. Yes a bit dogee buy I'm ok... It was expensive but cheaper than trading it or dumping the wife.

Amen! If I still lived in Maine (grew up in the Bangor area) we could be friends.

OP, be encouraged that there are people who enjoy their Tacomas.

OP, have you thought about daily driving the new truck and making the 1st gen a trail rig?

I think you and Hilux are talking about the same thing. At least on VWs you have to physically push the shifter down towards the floor to be able to shift to R.

Funny/almost tragic story: I absentmindedly tried to shift my 5 sp into "6th" after a hard pull (is that possible on the 4 bangers) and realized just in time. Prior vehicle was a manual passat

Ya, most manuals I have driven have had some sort of mistake proof way to stop from accidentally going into reverse. I remember VWs having to push down and our Subaroooo has a ring to lift under the shift knob.

When I used to valet cars I got in a Subaru and took me awhile to figure that out since it's funny not to tell people that don't know.

That was a great line. It probably got lost a bit because of your post but it was very funny.

Try taking it to the dealer and have them do the tranny TSB. I had the first TSB and it reverted back to searching for gears and never up shifting in cruise. I took it back and had the revision done and now it's great. I have no complaints at all with the transmission.
