That sounds like the acceleration shifting tables.

Bouncing between 5th and 6th would be fine to me. Modifying TC unlock in 5th like you have done is on my to do list.

Yeah, something is off. Looks like you either hitting a max engine load (airload tables?) or downshift points (unlikely).
I just went to a town 15 miles east of me. All steep grades to and from. This is me climbing up Snoqualmie Ridge portion of the trip.
6 speed doing 80. Still having 600 rpms available.
I did not drop to 4th on my trip on the freeway.

Yeah it could have to do with my Airload tables. Which tables are you referring to specifically?

My throttle S 5th and 6th gears are exactly the same as yours. But as far as the airload tables I’ve only adjusted the control, expected and acceleration throttle request to airload tables.

Does it trigger a shift when you hit 100% load?

before figuring out TC unlocking, I would hit 97-98% and drop to 4th. I think I hovered around 96 and the steepest point of the trip. I drop to 4th if I shove the pedal.

Did you just focus on 5th gear TC unlocking? Or 5th and 6th?

Pretty much going up an incline and I’ll be cruising between 70-75 and it will start to decel. So I give it some throttle and it keeps decelerating so I keep giving it more and then it will shift to 5th for like 2 seconds then slams into 4th. It’s like when it gets to 5th it’s already at the highest throttle allowed for 5th gear so it downshifts again. Now when I’m in cruise control it does it every damn time no matter what you do. So I usually click it out of cruise before hills.

5th. I hate getting stuck in 4th climbing. I'm a passenger when it drops to 4th. The speeds that you may need to unlock TC in 6th are in traffic violation territory...

Yeah I hate when it gets stuck in 4th. I can let off the throttle completely and it will hang in 4th for a few seconds then finally shift

That's what i experienced as well. I dont use CC though

    try this
5th TC unlocking. 50 value - lower unlock earlier, higher - later. this 92 unlocks it around 34-35 % of accelerator

    upload_2020-11-29_17-24-32.jpg

5th TC locking - I set value 100. Go higher if locks earlier.

I will try those tables out. I currently have 2 files where everything is the same except the 4-6th shift points and TC tables to test the highway driving. Trying to narrow down the issues the best I can.

Anyone play with the torque model - optimal engine torque nm.. yet ?
Edit- trying to think of another peace of the puzzle to adjust that will change everything even a little more.

if you run a math on locking and unlocking tables on 5th, you will see that unlocking TC speed at given accelerator in you conditions is in a different zip code. So while you are trying to get anything out of engine, you are getting close to max engine load and being forced to downshift. This is where folks who are trying to "hold" gears longer will get into the dead pedal situacion.
You may play with numbers to get your sweet spot, but just keep in mind the tranny temps. Staying unlocked at a high load/speeds for longer will warm up the tranny. Good luck.

Off topic but I’ve tuned my 2017 A/T Tacoma and it runs great. My friend wants his tuned aswell and his is a 2019 A/T Tacoma. How do I go about doing that? I know the ECU ID would be different but could I use the same file? (I’m currently using mooseditty’s tune at the moment)

You will not be able to use the same file. Check out the 3.7L User Contributed Tunes link in my signature and see if there's one for his model year. May need to update his ECU prior to though.
