I mean, I get it, they don't know the risks involved, they don't really know any better. In the El Paso area, my buddy and I have built up a positive reputation for ourselves in the local groups, so we're vouched for. So I get quite thoroughly how people get told hey so and so can take care of you, you'll be set, and then they just reach out and expect to be taken care of.

I think that sorta falls under the category of deep end, since I imagine something similar probably happened with this DFW thing.

And even if that other dude is just salty he didn't get to flash the guy for a profit, that's believable too. Hell, I admittedly was/am salty about Chan blowing through Arizona and snapping up all the customers I'd worked to have lined up. Not going to bash him or his work though. It's just how the game is played, no sense in spreading false info to hurt the guy.

Honestly I kinda thought that’s what it was. He didn’t claim to be authorized and I didn’t ask so that was bone head move on my part.

Honestly I don't really blame you after having first hand experience with how the conversations frequently go, either from people reaching out to be tuned or being referred over to me and my partner.

Is there a lesson to be learned, sure. But I guess I sympathize and understand how it happened.

most people end up getting themselves a kit after buying one of these street tunes and not knowing what the heck they actually bought.

Yeah well at least I got an answer here and I know now. Truck isn’t damaged yet in fact it drives better than ever. I’ll definitely be babying it till I get it over to authorized OV Dealer (didn’t know that existed) or get the cable and tune pack myself. For all I know it could be fine but I have no way to monitor it no clue what timing are fueling is at or what’s going on in the trans tune.

I was actually a little surprised, and I suppose I shouldn't have been, when after awhile I realized that most people don't even want edited maps. They just want the regular, tried and true OVTune, developed by Mat.

And so when you've got people that are also advertising tuning but they're either not clear about them flashing modified maps, or not bothering to say anything at all, especially maps that have become popular enough that they're being referred to by a whole other name, well you're left with people not even receiving what they actually wanted. Regardless of whether or not the flashed map was superior.

Reminds me of a doctor I used to work with. One day he took over during a case we were doing. I know my job but we'd only just started working together, didn't really know each other yet. I hadn't given him a reason to doubt my ability. He goes, "listen, it's not that I don't trust you, it's just that I don't trust you." Lmao I actually thought that was more than fair.

It’s because OV maps have a lot of RD time in them and tested by a lot of folks on here so they know they are good and won’t KO something. If I could find a competent dyno tuner I’d be game for one off custom tune but no one around me has any kind of reputation for that or will even touch these trucks. I mean I get why I feel the same way I have a boosted Silverado also that’s not my DD so when my tuner was helping me get set up for that I was cool with pushing it because a. It’s not a $35k truck and b. If it blows up it can sit in the driveway and I can still go to work.

That is part of the reason to stick with someone local. You are more likely to get support down the road.

Well about to fix my own mistake. Hopefully this saves someone else. Instead of spending $200 for a “tune” from someone you have no clue what they are flashing to your truck, Just buy the cable and tune pack from OV and do it right the first time or use OV authorized dealer...live and learn I guess. Could have been into it for $750 now it’s going to cost me $950 (my own fault).

Thanks @OVTune for your input and getting me sorted.

The guy that installed your tune. Anyone that actually knows how to use the vF software should be able to walk you through what was flashed and show you it was legit in about 5 min.

The original guy that flashed my truck sure but I have no way to verify if he is lying to me or not. After the conversation I just had with him I’m about 99% sure it’s a modded tune and not the 2.0 base file. Like Matt said you gotta know who your buying from and OV isn’t tracking these idiots down it’s on you. If someone flashes a garbage tune to your truck and you KO a trans or long block your screwed. Go look at what Toyota charges for a long block for these trucks it’s not a risk I’m wanting to take.

From his message I’m not sure how he doing it but these are not OV 2.0 base files. They are copied from other ECU ID’s of other base files. Regardless whole thing is sketchy.
