So i actually have gotten mine to where it is extremely smooth by adjusting the low knock tables in the ranges that were reporting feedback of around -7

In the morning driving to work when it was cool, it drove great and was giving me a Knock Learn value of around 22-23

In the afternoon when it got over 70 degrees outside my knock feedback under load would tank to -6 -7 and by the time i got home my Learned value was around 16 or 17 (pathetic really)

I could really feel those knock events as a stumble/tugging/lunging feeling.

So after logging a LOT this weekend, and driving in various conditions, im to the point where it felt good in both weather conditions for 2 days straight.

Today (pictured below) is the highest knock learn value i've had. It varied between 22 and 25 and the highest knock feedback i got was a -5 under heavy load at 1900 rpm in 6th gear (lugging the motor)

I feel that the truck was always trying to run at the most aggressive timing it could, and it felt good when it could do that, but on the days it couldn't, it was a piece of crap.

Now it is almost never hitting a -5 or more and almost always at -3 or even -1 and i saw 0 at one point, meaning its adding timing since it has not hit knock. It gives a feel of smooth acceleration, rather than always pulling back.

The last two days have been the smoothest running, and closest to a cable throttle i've had yet. That's why i wanted volunteers to test and see how it handles different conditions.

Obviously warmer weather is to come, and i will have to continue to test and log but it felt damn good, and im sure there is more to be had from this.

Also, in my previous edits, it was throttle limited (maxing at 70-80% load), and any attempt to increase that caused me rev hang. Now im able to hit 98% load and haven't had any major increases in rev hang (at least no more than was previously there) I have a theory on why this happens more in certain conditions.

Its only like 4 maps changed off the base OVtune.

    Plus the throttle limits removed

I'm using a reg file (not SFOB) But i bet it rivals that. I'm also running 89 octane rather than 87.

Also pretty sure it can be used on a FOB file without issue. Ill PM you the changes.

Hey guys, I know it was one of you MT folks who provided me the tacoma overhaul manual (13...14k page doc?)
Would you happen to still have it and could provide me a copy again please?

That is different than the Service Manual, right? I vaguely recall something about it in a past post. This is the SM, just in case (241mb):

Soooo, The intake Valve "Base intake valve angle target" only affects acceleration (on throttle)

The exhaust target is the same.

It will not change off throttle behavior.

Why/how did i find this out? I noticed that during off throttle engine load was 15%. So i changed the values in that to a more advanced and tested it. No affect. It would only change when the throttle was pressed.

Just passing info as i find it.

To me, that makes sense. Since there is no throttle / toque request, the VVT goes to the base / starting values?

the hope i had was by advancing them, and in turn having them close earlier, would raise compression, resulting in increased engine braking.

    dreams crushed.

    Oh! I see.

I wonder if there is a map for that that we don't have access to. Maybe something for when the engine is in DFCO? It would suck for it to go away when the injectors cut back in, but it might be a way to have advance and not affect low torque requests?

They also don't move while sitting in neutral and revving

Other than the desire for engine braking, that also makes sense as the ECU would know that there is no torque output either. But, I do know that DFCO can be sensed while revving in neutral. If you blip up and monitor fuel state, it will flick to DFCO until the injector cut-in happens. The neutral RPMs is the same as 1st Gear.

Good to know. Dfco doesn't bother me much as it's only prevalent in first gear.

It just drives me a bit crazy that i can make edits that make engine braking worse, but can't seem to make it better. I just have to revert changes that cause it.

Yeah. And even with the slight change in 1st it is pretty noticeable. Looking forward to the final fix there.

I hear you. We almost need the jake brake tune. Hahaha!

    Bunch 'o random stuff

Man, I'd love to help here but 2 things:
    1) I'm running the 93 octane dump tube file and have a wide open exhaust, so it may not be apples to apples.
    2) This is all so far above my pay grade, I sometimes wonder why I even follow the thread anymore. I'm honestly just reading words that I can't make any sense of.

You could use a couple of the edits but i think on 93 octane it would limit performance seeing as i adjusted the ignition timing for 89 on an 87 file to reduce knock.

Also I'm not sure if the low knock tables are used with high octane fuel. May be the high knock tables?

Those would be questions for @OVTune
