It appears that we're experiencing exactly the same issue:

My brakes were totally fine before the Ray10's
I don't have ECGS and feel the grinding on the steering wheel. But that has been there and it's not really a vibration/shaking...
I have driveshaft carrier drop and I know what a driveshaft vibration is...it's not this one.

Discount has ordered a new set of Toyo at3's but I really don't know if it's a fix. I'm going to get a set of TRD 17" wheels and possibly go back to them again.... it's not worth the time and effort.

Maybe adjusting your caster settings might help a bit?? Possible water in the tire from air compressors?? Only takes a little. Mess with tire pressure. I’ve had KO2 on a tundra and never could fix it. I got lucky on my Tacoma though. Try running them at 35-36 cold. Good luck this issue is frustrating.

Good suggestions but my caster, camber, etc is fine - alignment 2 weeks ago.
Messing with tire pressure helped a little but I think is just a tweak that minimizes the symptoms of a problem of which the root cause is a still a mystery.

After the third balancing and setting cold psi at 28, the vibration is still present. It's a tenacious bastard.
I have ordered Cooper AT3 LT's that will be here on Wednesday. Hopefully it works. If not, my next best guess is leaf shims.

I will report back on Wednesday.

If you avoided every shop that someone had an issue with, you would have no where to go. Discount is one of the largest independent tire dealers in the country. Tires is all they do. Consequently you are more likely to hear about them than moe, manny, and jack or any of the other players out there.

Ahh, seeing that you are following more bad advice with the best intentions. Air pressure is not a solution for a vibration. Don't waste your time.

You need to separate your braking vibration from your driving vibration. They are by no means related.

It sounds like your balance issue is corrected. It isn't uncommon for tires to run a little rough when cold. Especially if they have nylon or any of the fibers similar to that in their family. They get stiff when they are cold and take a few miles to warm up. I'm guessing that is why it smoothed out and was smooth on your way home.

I informed the tech and he thinks this is now a brake issue. But it’s also happening without braking... there really isn’t a pattern or routine to it. Yesterday it vibrated all day with braking (severely) and without braking (mildly). Also there’s vibration in the seats which makes the ride uncomfortable.

anyway i have a TRD big brake kit which I had purchased for the 4runner, I think it should fit Tacoma as well. ( it doesn’t list Tacoma for some reason but I checked the dimensions and it should fit with 17” wheels). I’m going to put it on and rule the “warped rotor “ scenario out as well. See what’s next... anyone know if there are sny incompatibility issues with the TRD bbk and Tacoma? Hope it doesn’t nose dive afterwards...

Ive had an out of round rear drum that made the wheel shake like a bent axle shaft. Was warranty lucky for the customer.

I’m sure mine is not a drive shaft vibration as I had that when I lifted the truck and fixed it using carrier drop shim. Moreover it’s a totally different type of vibration. And didn’t shake the steering wheel at all.

I guess you can try and put some heavy load in the bed and see if the vibration goes away. That could then be the drive shaft angle issue.

when I first lifted my truck I had put all the old suspension in the bed to take it to my storage. It was there for a few days until I put tge in the storage. Going back from the storage unloaded is where I first noticed the vibration accelerating from a stop to about 20 mph.

put some load back there and it was gone. I think it’s a good way to verify.

No idea but moving it left to right made the other side wobble. First and only I've seen. Possibly dropped during a previous inspection.

I would totally agree that braking vibration and driving vibration are not related, however this fact remains:
My truck was vibration free since I bought it through a few configs.

Follow my chain of wheel/tire combos:

    0. Stock config. Leveling kit. No vibration. 2k miles

    1. Lifted 2.5" Bilsten 5100. Stock wheels with 285/75 Pathfinder AT's. No vibration. 18k miles

    2. Same lift. 16" Level 8 MK6 0 offset wheels with same pathfinders. No vibration. 16k miles

    3. Fox 2.0 lift. Same wheels, but with 285/75 Cooper AT3 XLT. No vibration. (Heavy tires killed MPG, went for larger wheel and smaller tire) 7k miles

    4. 17" Level 8 MK6 -12 offset with 265/70 Toyo tires. Vibration at high speeds 60-70ish and while accelerating and while braking at and around those speeds.

The only variables that changed were the wheels and tires.

I have very little steering wheel vibration, but very noticeable seat/floor/body vibration and I can hear it. Sounds like I have mud tires at those speeds.

Not a brake/rotor issue. Not an air pressure issue.

The Truck did drop 1" in height due to the new tire wheel setup. It was aligned.

Could possibly be the new angle of the driveshaft is simply an angle that the truck doesn't like. I ordered 2 degree leaf shims to experiment with if after the new Coopers are installed on Wednesday I still experience the vibration.

I'm getting to the bottom of this fucker.

Sometimes the larger more aggressive all terrain tires can enhance the vibration that may have been there prior to the lift. I would find a friend or see if someone would swap out the factory wheels and tires just to eliminate your wheels and tires for being the issue. I would try some et lugs or re torque to spec. Do you have a rear carrier bearing drop? What's the type of lift do you have?

I have a 4Runner as well and I swapped out my front wheels and tires with the 4Runner’s and the steering wheel vibration was gone.
Again maybe there’s nothing wrong with the large tires and wheels but they’re just amplifying the problem/vibration from whatever it’s causing it

try filling the bed with a couple hundred pounds of load. If vibration is gone then the carrier drop or angle shim will help.

Interesting you mention that, I actually just drove my previous 16" wheels/285 coopers that I sold to the freight company yesterday so there was about 250lbs in the bed (3 wheels/tires in bed, one in the back seat.)

The truck did drive noticeably smoother, but still felt the vibration I think. Honestly I wasn't paying specific attention. Now I wish I was - I just think I would have noticed if it was suddenly a smooth ride after a month of vibrations.

I have a new Limited 4Runner, well my wife does. It was certified used at my friends Toyota dealership with 22k miles. Its so smooth but I detected a slight vibration after they did new tires. The cause was the back pass side wheel was not torqued to spec, in fact all were loosened and re torqued which did the trick. 4runners are sweet!

Hi, any updates with the new tires?
Discount replaced my Toyo AT3’s yesterday. Drove it for 20-25 miles it was perfect. After that it started mild vibration in steering wheel while braking. No body vibration.

This morning started the truck and there was vibration in steering wheel without even braking. At 55-65mph. Dropped it off at Toyota checking rotors as well as every other possibility...

wondering if you had any luck?

Still waiting on my tires! Hopefully today.

Bummer man, I bet the smile faded from your lips after that first 25-30 miles.
    What a tease!
Hopefully Toyota can get to the bottom of it.

I’ll update ASAP after the new tires are installed and have a few miles on them.
