Vibration while in Drive but stopped

    Truck: '97, regular cab, 2.4L, 145k miles

I have owned this truck over 10 years and I have had this issue for almost as long as I can remember. Yet, in the past year, it seems to be growing worse.

From a cold start, everything is fine. But once it hits operating temp, the whole engine vibrates. Even in park. But in Drive, while stopped and holding the brake down, the vibration is so bad the steering column is shaking.

Yet, hold the brake down and give it some gas, vibration lessens significantly. There is no noticeable vibration at any given speed.

Over the years, I have taken it to many shops and they all say: mounts. It's not the mounts. I changed them myself and still have the exact issue. No shop I have ever taken it to has ever been able to accurately diagnose this issue.

No CEL. No apparent other issues.

I would greatly appreciate some advice and/or input. I am truly out of ideas.

I have been chasing the same issue with my 3RZ. It gradually got worse over the past year, it did not do it when I got it. You can read through my thread and see if any of the things I tried will help. Definitely pull the throttle body off and clean it as well as the Idle Air Controller.

Is the engine's idle itself steady and smooth? Can worn transfer case mounts cause a problem like yours?

Edit: just saw you're a 2.4L, so nevermind on the transfer case mounts.

seems to just be the nature of the beast, 4 cylinders are the worst and member here have replaced everything there is to replace and still have the same issue. some have speculated its an issue with the ECM and it just cant be fixed. turning on the a/c will speed up the idle and smooth it out as will cold starting because the ECM riches the mixture when cold.

my 04 v6 does it too but no where near as bad as my 99 with the 2.4 did

its a taco thing, they all do it and you cant stop them from doing it no matter how much you spend or how many parts you replace

So I had the same issue. It was vibrating when in drive, only when stopped. I finally replaced the clutch fan and the problem is gone. I did NOT replace the calling fan pulley bracket, but may do that part when I get the gusto to work on the truck again. Thank you ROKKO. I also saw this on another thread.
