Some asshole guy hit me in stop and go traffic, then just took off. How much in damages do you think he caused?

As you can see the bumper, fender, and fender flair all need to be replaced.

I saw what he looked liked and got his license plate, and filed a police report.

It's going to cost you whatever your deductible is. The most important part for you to do is make sure you tell your insurance you can identify him and give them the plate number.

Probably in the 2k range. I had really similar damage from being backed into.

That's probably going to be a tough one to estimate. Considering the metal appears to be pinched you're probably looking at $3-4K. Sometimes the body shops won't even fix a bed that is in a similar condition. They have to order/locate a bed and paint it.

Assuming your insurance company's investigation results in extension of uninsured motorist coverage, your own deductible won't come into play unless it's less than your State's mandated uninsured motorist deductible.

If they can find the at fault driver from the tag number, and he has insurance, then they should take care of you. Let your insurance company handle that for you.

Damage looks minimal. I think after a wheeling trip one time mine was worse :anonymous:

Your scum count is too low. How about "lots" or "too many" or even "most" ? Those seem closer to reality nowadays. I used to be an optimist but have been forced into being a realist.

I was thinking that too.... sounds like some fiberglass bedsides and longtravel SUA setup is going to be needed to fix this.

OP that sucks, id be furious.

Based on personal experience, when you make the insurance claim make sure that you request "diminished value" compensation in addition to paying to fixing your vehicle. If there is a police report there will be a permanently recorded accident on your vehicle's carfax report that will reduce the value of your truck when you go to trade it in. The only way to get compensated for this is to put in a diminished value claim now. As a "professional courtesy" to the other insurance company your insurance company will not advise you to make the claim because tomorrow a different claim could come the other way. I got burned for $5k on a hit and run that I had to fight a year after I traded the vehicle in before I finally got compensation. lesson learned: Make the claim upfront.

Not all States provide for diminished value claims and not all accidents meet the qualification for one either. And if you're ever at fault, that automatically disqualifies you from making one. Check with your claim handler to see if you qualify, it's not automatic.

BTW, I'm an auto claim adjuster and have been one for over 10 years.

I defer to your expertise but in my case a drunk hit me while I was standing still in a turning lane and I had to chase him down and guide the police in for the arrest. I don't see the harm in asking.

Right. I wasn't saying you should not have got one. Just setting a reasonable expectation for anyone reading and might be assuming they'll get a DV claim any time they're in an accident.

    To update this thread...

The total cost in damages was $4,189.96. I tried to contact his insurance company(safeco), but they would not respond. Paid my $500 deductible, and now my insurance will attempt to recover the $$$ from his insurance.

I have not heard anything from the cops, so he will probably go free. Next time I'm going to chase their ass down

Yeah, your insurance company will take care of it. If Safeco doesn't pay up, they are a member of the Arbitraton Agreement and your company can take them to arbitration to recover. And hey... just because you don't hear from the police doesn't mean they won't charge him. Check your state's judiciary website, you can find out on there if he had any charges filed against him.
