Great idea, but those (me) who still have loans out on our TDI's couldn't afford to take the hit on trade-in value to buy something else. I was at an event on Friday, and there was a woman who manages a law firm there. I asked her opinion about the scandal, and she just smiled. I can see lavish vacations in her future.

If a court comes to a settlement you will get well above resale value for your TDI. People in the USA affected by the Ram buyback are getting 5-7K more for their trucks than they are worth. I understand that it's not ideal, but you will make out well from the settlement.

I bought a Passat TDI last November. I put half the cost down and financed the rest just to keep some kind of credit going as I don't really have any other debt. I was never under water in terms of owing, I even has equity in it(not really, considering I'd never get close to what I paid down). I hardly ever use the car, so I put it up for sale before this crap started. Now any equity I had is gone and I can't get rid of a car that just sits in my way and I never use. I sure hope they have a buy back and pay 5-7k over what it is worth. The KBB dropped significantly when this came about. I already was going to loose money, but now it isn't worth half of what I paid not even a year ago. The car has really lows miles, fully loaded, and excellent condition. Buying cars is obviously not an investment, but this is bull.

The lawyers do the work. Motivating them with a big payday makes sure they get you the beat possible outcome.

There was I guy I read about on MSN news. He said he paid $35K for his fully loaded Passat TDI and tried to sell it for a 10K loss after shit hit the fan. He said the only offer he got was from a guy who figured he could sell it in Mexico, the offer he got....$7500.

I wouldn't panic sell until this shakes out. The odds are better to see what VW is going to do about this.

Or buy the 35k car off someone for 10k and wait for a buyback or for a fix and resale pops back up

Actually I got pissy with someone on here for intentionally buying a rusted Tacoma for a few 1000 then selling it back to Toyota shortly after for like 10k or something....so here is me being a hypocrite :p

I laugh at those who own these cars and now all of a sudden feel the need to sell and will whine about the value.

Reminds me of this who "needed" to sell their home when the bubble burst.
"You were happy when you bought your 300K home... Now because it's value has gone down you want to sell it"

Seriously, you bought the car because of the mpg's and the longevity(which it still provides) I hope you didn't buy a vw because of resale value and a diesel because of "green" lol.

You'd be surprised at how many people bought these cars just jumping on the tdi trend without knowing much about diesels. Seriously who leases a tdi? Who buys one planing to sell it with under 175k miles? They're not even broken in yet!

Eh.....a sudden drop in value b/c of a companies doing I would be miffed at.

What if Toyota did something to severely hurt resale? Even if you were not planning on selling it would you be not even slightly t/o'd

Let's say....pondering for a second.... toyota does something and resale drops on the tacomas. You planned in keeping your truck and it gets totaled in an accident. Now the insurance company will only give you the current market value, which is lower b/c what ever Toyota did.

Lot of if's and but's. I don't ponder such things.
If the dollar value changes on my truck, it does not change the value it provies me and the purpose I bought it for.
Some purchases in life are consumable and not a growth investment.

Well said, good sir. Especially with a vehicle moreso than a home, as a vehicle generally speaking is more at risk on a daily basis between accidents, break-ins, and such
