So my wife and I have a 2012 Golf tdi. It is one of the cheater cars. (That's why it is a blast to drive.)I plan on selling back to Vw when the settlement finally comes out. So my question is what to get as a replacement. I have a 3 year old and another one on the way. I would like to get a 4runner but my wife's says to big. Since it's her car, I need to find something she would like but will fit me, (6'2") and have 2 car seats with room for a 130# dog in the back.

How about a highlander or Rav4 both Toyotas so they would be reliable, amd they are smaller than a 4runner, although the rav4 might be kinda tight you being six foot two

I was just looking at the highlander on line. Not bad. Any personal experience with either?

Mazda CX5. We have a Mazda3 and it's a blast to drive, stylish and really well screwed together. And the interior materials are far superior to any Toyota I've ever sat in. That said, I really regret that we didn't get the CX5. (we'd looked at both but the 3 fit our needs at the time better (aging dog that couldn't jump up into the car).

My wife has test driven the new RAV4 and really liked it, but she also likes the Mazda CX5. She hasn't driven one of those yet, but my daughter's 2009 Mazda 3 has been a great car and is fun to drive.

I have nothing new to add since I am just going to agree with the above - RAV4 or Mazda CX5. My sister has the RAV and a co-worker has the CX5. I like both. I am 6'4" and fit comfortably in both. I have never been a Mazda fan, but have to agree with the above that there is nothing wrong with them. RAV will be my first choice though just because I am a Toyota fan, but go check the CX5 out also.

Any reason why you don't just keep the VW?
Other than the cheater part, it's a nice car.

The highlander is a but bigger, and has a bigger engine, which is nice if you live in an area that requires that like hills or lots of fast traffic, the highlander is also a bit more smooter rideing, but the down fall would be the price tag.

The settlement from Vw is going to be fix their cheating software or buy back the car. I have spoken to several performance shops that specialize in Tdi cars and they all confirm the new software will drastically effect everything. (Performance, mpg, longevity). Vw had eluded to this as well. That why they will be also offering additional funds I I waive might right to further legal action.

Could you just not take the car back to them? Leave it the way it is unless the settlement is actually worth it

Living in Washington I can't go anywhere with out crossing a mountain range. Well except B.C but who wants to go there. What ever we get I will try to buy used. Not big on new vehicle purchases after my pos Xterra no this bullshit.

4runner. That's what my wife has. Took her a little while to get used to it, but she loves it now and swears she'll never go back to a car. It's comfy, gets decent mpg, and has a ton of room. Also, the sliding rear window is great, we've got a big ass dog (130#) and he loves riding in the back and that the window goes down so he can stick his fat head out.

We looked at smaller suvs(highlander / rav4) but with the big ass dog and a kid the room in those two just wasn't cutting it. Do yourself a favor and get the 4runner, you'll thank me later...

I'm gonna shoot for a runner. She has always liked the G500 but those things are 40+k for a 10 year old one. Way to much.

How about a used Landcruiser? I know they are a bit big, but they are nice

Again I would totally be down for that, but I don't know about the wife. She did say she liked the FJ80's when I was looking at rigs before I bought my Tacoma. I think I need to use the safety angle. She drove a Gti before the golf and that was totaled when she reared a 2nd gen 4runner at 35mph. The runner drove away with a couple scratches on the bumper. The gti was thrashed.
