That's actually not the speculation at all. The speculation is the first gen cars will have to be retrofitted with Def tanks which will not be cost effective. Will be cheaper to buy them back, hence the buyback.

Even then vw hasn't said anything about what the fix will be. No one has any idea what they are doing. Speculation is just that, complete guesses.

OP if you're still in the market (didn't want to read through 6 pages to find out), we just got the wife a VW Tiguan. If its small SUV you want, I'll provide my $.02.

The 2.0 turbo is plenty of fun to drive, it has good "giddy up" for a small engine SUV. There's lots of room too, I'm 6'3" and with the driver's seat set for me, I could fit behind it with plenty of leg room to spare. It needs 91, but I was getting 27 MPG on a 6 hour drive going 81 MPH (cruise control set). Not bad, considering its only rated for 26. So I got 27 going over 80 and with the engine still breaking in (1500 miles on it). The wife loves it too. It's well equipped for a small SUV. We got the base model (S model), and even that came with leatherette, seat heaters, bluetooth, and backup cam. All that for under 25k OTD.

On top of that, its a very easy car to drive. Great visibility, comfortable, and very maneuverable. Obviously, time will tell on reliability.

I really not looking for your opinion on what will or will not do. I have a independent Vw shop I have been working with for over 20 years for that. I do however need reviews of small to midsize SUVs and wagons, so if you have one of those I would love to hear it.

Nice. That's good to know info. Whatever we get will need to fit 2 car seats. How's the storage behind rear seats?

...^^^... I just had a 2015 Honda CRV AWD before my present Tacoma .... That CRV was fantastic in every way & good QC on fit and finish ... except it had no pickup truck bed that I badly needed.

My wife has a 2005 Rav and loves it. 140K and runs like a top..

My mother just got a CR-V..mainly for the AWD as she is on dialysis and winters here can suck. Says it's the best vehicle she has ever had.

My sis in law just got a CR-V as well but looked real hard at the Sportage, she did like it but the CR-V was a good deal for them.

From my understanding its smallest in the segment, but its still a decent size. We went on a weekend trip and had room to spare too. The back seats can also slide forward to make extra room (while still retaining use of the back seats). Our has the roof rack rails, so worst case we set that up and start using those. We got this with the idea it will still be around when we have kids.

Sounds pretty good. We just picked up a new infant seat in preparation for #2's arrival. I'm going to start testing out all the suggestions so far. I need to make a list.

Enjoy the shopping lol. We're liking this thing so much we may move up to the Toureg if we ever need to, that's the bigger SUV.

Oh yes. I covet the old V10 TDI version. If only I could find a well preserved one!

Of the cars listed, only the CX-5 comes with manual trans, but in front wheel drive only. We had an AWD CX-5 for a year, and all 3 of it's drivers (me, wife, daughter) really disliked it. Noisy, tinny-feeling, joke of a slush-box trans, really uncomfortable seats. It did well in slippery conditions, and was good looking, but our '12 Golf TDI manual is a superior car in every area mentioned above.

My wife can't drive a manual. I am burned out on driving one in traffic. My Tacoma is the first auto I have had.

When then, of the cars listed, it would be fine as a run-about car, but since I have the same car as you do now, you know the solid feeling the Golf has, and only the Tig would be similar. I drove one when the first came out, not the latest version, but it was fine but really expensive for what you got. I can't remember if the new 1.8T VW's need premium gas, so that might be a factor as well. We should know more about the recall tomorrow. I'd love to get a 4 door GTI, but it depends on the offer.

Hopefully Vw does right by us in the buy back. This is a very solid little car. It handles so much nicer than our last Gti.
