I am a VW fanatic, and if this truck hits the market, ill be in line waiting to buy one! I love my yota, but I've had 4 VW's and I can say from experience they are bad ass!

It looks like a mk5 Jetta with a truck bed.

That's just called brand identification. To be honest the only reason most of us like the hilux is the diesel. I personally wouldn't by one on looks. And it's also VW's first go at a modern truck in a tough segment of the market

True. But unfortunately all the vehicles they made were VWs.

While Toyota quality improved since the "Jap scrap" days, VW quality has been slipping. And being the largest manufacturer isn't a plus. GM quality wasn't good. Toyota quality slipped when they were rapidly expanding a few years ago.

Both the current Hilux and the global Ranger are 2" narrower than the Tacoma. Since the Amarok was designed for the same European/Asian market, I don't think it's larger than the Tacoma.

What trim level was the Hilux your brother-in-law drove? Did it have open diffs?

    Well, it is:

    Tacoma: Width: 72.2"
    Amarok: Width: 76.9"
    Ford F-150: Width: 78.9"
    Tundra: Width: 79.9"

It is almost as wide as the F-150 and halfway between the Tacoma and Tundra (actually closer to the Tundra by 1").

Similar with other dimensions: height, length etc.

I am a die-hard Toyota fan, but I really do like the VW Amarok. My brother-in-law is very full of crap when it comes to build quality - he always complains about cars' quality, fit of panels, rattles etc. and he is in love with his Amarok. (His wife drives a Chevy SUV, and he wants to puke over that thing:p)

Yes, a very nice diesel. Not huge like F-250 Power Stroke size, but totaly competent to do the job, and it is fuel efficient.

VW has had some reliability issues here, mostly electrical issues with the ones assembled in Mexico, from what I understand. The ones assembled in South Africa, and most other places in the world are very well built, and I have never heard of any specific issues. I had a 1996 Jetta CLi in South Africa and put 250,000 km on it and did not have any issues. I sold it because I moved to the US, otherwise I would have kept it and put more miles (kilometers) on it.

It's a VW so I have a constant off relationship with everything they make, all of my experiences with any VW have been bad, so I would stay away. But that is more of my opinion.

I'm the same way. I fairly report I have had friends and relatives with VWs that were reliable for them and they liked.

I personally will never touch the brand. I don't like how they do business in any aspect: I don't like how they design, I don't like how they build, I don't like their scummy dealers, I don't like how they deliver "service", I don't like their difficult-to-work-on-yourself vehicles, and I don't like how dumbass suburban women use them as status symbols amongst one another (BMW for people who can't actually afford BMWs because they had kids).

    Put another way: Fuck Volkswagen.

Looks like a great truck. I'm curious to see what type of off-road options you can get with it and if WE will ever see them come stateside.

To get around the 25% chicken tax, VW will have to build the pickup in the US or Mexico. It would very possibly have worse reliability than the Chevy Colorado. :)

This is not a slight against Mexico. A good portion of Tacomas are build in Mexico. It's a criticism of VW's Mexican mfg operations. VW improved reliability in the 1990s by moving production of US-bound vehicles out of Mexico to the US. :D Even then, none of the VW models today are as reliable as Toyotas in the same class, according to JDPower 3-year dependability ratings. The 2009 Camry is more reliable than the 2009 Passat. The Matrix is more reliable than the Jetta. The RAV4 is more reliable than the Tiguan. The Sienna is miles ahead of the Routan. Average 3-year dependability ratings of VW is in fact worse than Chevrolet. Even if the Amaroks built in Hanover, Germany are good, they may cease to be reliable once built stateside.

There's also a difference between quality and reliability. I've been in a few VWs. Ride, handling, interior fit and choice materials are all top notch, but the cars aren't the most reliable.

no way i worked at a vw dealer for over 10 years and i will never buy anything they make lol. they are so far gone from the days when they made great cars its not even funny.

for example parafin wax like substance melting down your rockers from your doors on a hot summer day, ie, sound deadening lol.

terrible diesels with belts that vw said needed to be serviced every 25k!!!

window regulator nightmares literally hundreds of windows taped up :)

overall lack of quality and with me being as german as german can be it pains me to see a car supposedly designed in germany and built in mexico :/

i like my bmw's and my mercedes porsche & even porsche has some issues as far as i'm concerned.
