Man this is all just an attempt to help the GM and Dodge sales. The government is probably not happy on sales and is looking for any ploy to get people to buy their vehicles instead of Toyotas. No matter how dirty or unethical.

I would imagine if you went to a GM dealership pretending you were looking at trucks and said you really like the Toyotas but wanted to look at a GM, the sales guy will unload all of the noise on you. Probably even has printouts of articles to show.

They aren't going after BMW yet since Toyota is the main competition. I bet their heads about explode anytime they watch an NFL show and the Toyota logo is on the wall behind the talking heads. Olympics to I think.

Seems to me Toyota is responding pretty well on all issues. A little slow maybe but they do act eventually.

Seeing the third gen section forced me to get a Ford...
i wouldnt say they dug it all up, but the buyouts and shit sales for shit cars domestic plays a big contributor as to why they have been blowing over the domestic recalls and going after toyota. toyota has been rackig in the sales, even took the top spot for cash for clunkers, IIRC.

I still don't think that this has been handled any differently by the government than any of the past recalls that have resulted in publicized deaths. If anything, I can blame the media for overhyping it, which they tend do do with everything. That could cause public pressure on the government in which case they have no choice but to react so that folk don't say that they are doing nothing. But, I don't believe that the government is going after Toyota to save domestic sales.

A domestic car can get 50mph but if I still have to shell out a couple thousand dollars a year in maintenance I'm not seeing any of the savings. Reliability trumps the mileage game imo.

When I get in a non-toyota vehicle it just feels cheap. Plastic feels weak, parts don't seem to fit right, it drives "off" not unsafe just unpleasant. Seems like everyone from the designer to the guy cranking bolts at the factory didn't really care what they were doing. Lazy people don't make headlines when that's the standard.

Sure there are people at Toyota that don't give a crap. I've had salesmen insult me on the show room floor and I've had service managers flat out refuse to look up if my truck has an extended warranty. But those are the exception and there's always a place down the road that'll take care of you. And as an organization Toyota takes care of their customers. If there's a problem with a dealership you can take it Corporate and the situation will get resolved there. They acknowledge and fix would could be considered minor problems. When there's a safety hazard they FLAT OUT REFUSE TO SELL ANY EFFECTED VEHICLE. That's insane. I don't see any other car companies pulling vehicles off the lots. They let you drive it until the wiring harness catches on fire while you're doing 70 down the highway. My brother found out there was an immediate recall on his VW GTi when smoke started pouring out of the head unit.

The majority of people won't do any independent research on a problem and will be spoon fed the catastrophe of the week. They're car maintenance hypochondriacs. If you tell them the car takes off on its own it'll just take an unexpected down shift when they were fishing around in their pocket and pushed the pedal down to far and their car will be parked in a service bay with some woman hysterically crying at the service manager.

As an individual keep track of the issues that pertain to you, delve deeper into media headlines instead of buying into the hype, and take appropriate action when necessary. But TW members seem to be above the bell curve in that department.

For the people that believe it is our Government is conspiring to hurt Toyota sales, then please explain why it was the Japanese Government that told Toyota fix the Prius Brake problem?

I won't say whether I think the government or media is specifically taking this opportunity to bash Toyota with the sole purpose of increasing sales for GM and others, but I do find one thing specifically interesting...

In the past when GM was having trouble with quality, and sales were faltering, Toyota raised prices (and admitted they were doing so and why) so that GM would have a chance to make up some market share. Not that I feel the current Toyota issue is all that damn serious, but how does GM reply to it? Before the ink is even dry on the Toyota story they publicize an anticipated 25% increase in sales for the next quarter and show no concern for their (superior) competition.

When GM starts sucking hind tit Toyota takes loses to help them. Toyota management says they do not believe that the failure of any large automaker would help anyone. GM would fall all over themselves to get to a method that would take Toyota down.

Maybe you should try to take your fanboyism down a few notches? Are you so insecure about your purchase that you feel you must cry when someone simply points out that it has very real defects? LOL!

I am not misinformed about anything. In fact you are misinformed. The floormat problem involved Toyota factory floormats. How do I know? Because my father's Toyota factory all weather floormats have migrated towards the front of the vehicle on two separate occasions and caused the accelerator pedal to stick. It really does happen (though he had the good sense to put it in neutral).

When Toyota claims a certain gross vehicle weight rating and then you obtain your new vehicle with a reduced GVWR because Toyota does not know how to design your leaf spring suspension, that is called a mother fucking defect.

Somebody needs to call the waaambulance...

While I agree with you, you have probably just indicated that 50% of the people you know (friends, family, etc) should not be on the road because they are mechanically clueless.

    And finally...

I think its absolutely fantastic that Toyota is stepping up and resolving these problems, and doing so in a public manner (though its debatable that they would have without pressure). As a company they really do have my respect, and I am 10x happier that they have made a big deal about this (and potentially hurt my resale value) as it will force the problems to be resolved. When I had my problems with the Subie, Subaru didn't say zip. Not only did that car lunch an engine, it went on to have problems for an entire year. Constant CEL's, dealers not doing the work properly (a bonus part situation occurred), 10 different non-normal service visits in 1 year, etc. Subaru did nothing for me. I am confident that Toyota is fixing the problem.

I also ask that you keep in mind that I graduated from college 2 years ago and this is my second new car purchase. The first one was a complete flop, this one is starting to feel questionable. After 4 months of ownership I've got the dash rattle, there may or may not be a defect that will someday cause my vehicle to accelerate without my control, apparently the trans ecu needs flashed, I need an AAL in the rear suspension, and may now also need a prop shaft. Either you can understand that I am a little pissed off, or perhaps I had an entirely unrealistic view of what it meant to purchase a new vehicle. I'm starting to feel that the latter is the case.

Keeping an eye on your floormats requires no mechanical inclination. It's easier than adding fuel (Jersey guys, I know you don't pump your own fuel, but back me up on this!). Not having your floormats bunch up beneath the gas pedal simply requires paying attention to something that is literally at your feet. Doesn't get much easier than that.

I know and I would agree with you, but I'm guessing the average Joe wouldn't have really thought (prior to being informed) that their floormats could bunch up, cause the accelerator to get stuck, and accelerate out of control to their demise.

    Thats a good point, B02.

I remember when they did that, all though to be honest, part of the reason was to avoid another episode of the Japanese backlash similar to what happened some years back.
