In the old days and even today some of the truck makers offer a true tow package.
I know they offer some of the stuff on the taco but not really a Tow package.

What I'm talking about is in the Brake control or area that they would fit easy, socks, toow haul trans control, and springs.

With all the problems that Toyota has had with the springs.....
why not offer a tow package with true tow features.

He big thing would be to add a few springs to the pack or a better overload system and soft bump stops...
It would be cheap and easy to remove if people ordered a tow package a d had a problem with hard ride.

Trans control that holds the gear a little longer and limits the shifting in and out of lockup......

    Why not...
should be easy and somewhat cheap and better use than a Gopro mount and cup holders that will not hold anyhing other than cans....

I don't know about your "old days" but my "old days" didn't include a midsize truck in a manufacturer's lineup. I am thinking back to the seventies. Even in the 80's smaller trucks definitely were not used for any sort of towing purpose.

Midsize trucks aren't designed and never will be designed to haul a substantial amount. As soon as all that you is added the price would increase significantly and the truck would still be limited by its chassis and powertrain on the amount it could safely haul.

I don't know what the tow rating on the 16 is but I'm assuming it's at least 6500 lbs. so if your going to say it can tow 6500 then yes it needs a brake controller so like the OP said. Why not make it part of the package. I tow a 4,000 lb trailer often and using s brake controller make a world of difference even on a little trailer like that.

If you want a tow rig buy a full size.

    Correct.

A tow package is not needed on a vehicle with a chassis that cannot support towing substantial weight

There are many manufactures of brake controllers and it is better to install some thing that would fit you needs instead of a one size fits all. The factory controllers on the domestics have had lots of issues.

Once you get to the point of a trailer weighting more than the truck it's time to shop for some thing bigger.

one of the 100+ videos talked about tow rating, that it will be higher than 6500#, who knows how much though

I couldn't agree more. I see so many comments on here about towing. If I'm buying a vehicle primarily for towing, and I'm regularly towing anything bigger than a jet ski or atv or something of similar size and weight, I'm not even considering a mid size truck. Going right to full size.

Most folks "weighing in" on this forum aren't even aware that the owner's manual tells you to use trailer brakes on any trailer weighing more than, ready for this?

    ...not 5000lbs
    ...not 3500 lbs
    ...not 2500 lbs

    1000 lbs (!)

Given that recommendation - a place to plug in an aftermarket brake controller seems like a reasonable thing to ask.

"You sold me a 6500lb hitch, but no convenient place to mount the electronics I need to take advantage of it."

Alternatively, there's a reason the aftermarket thrives - it's to fill the gaps left by manufacturers.

Huh? My factory tow package on my 2nd Gen already came pre-wired for an aftermarket brake controller with a harness to plug right into. It's located right behind the dash.

My bad. My truck didn't come with a tow package so I didn't know that was included.

    In that case:

I agree with OP. True, these trucks were never meant to tow as their main duty. However, the gen 1 Tacoma had a tow package. Came with tow hitch and a better radiator.
Just because it's not a full size does not mean it cannot tow. The engines of mid-sized trucks are comparable or more powerful to many V8 of the 1980's.

Towing capacity is more than "engine power"

My '13 has a tow package. Which includes class IV hitch, 7 pin harness and plug, an auxiliary oil cooler, as well as I believe a bigger alternator (don't hold me on that one, I'd have to check the manual). In any event, the only thing lacking is a electronic brake controller. And someone just said the truck is wired for that, just need to plug in and mount the unit. With that said, even though Toyota says you can tow up to 6500#, I wouldn't buy a Tacoma, or Frontier, or any other mid size truck to tow anything heavier than the truck.

never thought of it that way, eye opening actually. My truck has the tow package, but i wouldnt want to tow something that will instead tow me.

So what most of you are saying is that these are not really a truck and that even if the factory said it will tow and is rated to tow 6500 lbs......

you should never do is as they are not made to tow.....

my god why the hell even put a tow rating on it..
why not state how many bags of food you can carry from the local store.....

Some of you just do not get it....
You are the type Toyota loves as no matter what crap they turn out you will love it....

Yes but no easy place to put it that your knee is not beating up against it all the time and where you can see it to adjust it or work the lever.

It is clear you have no idea what you are talking about and know nothing about towing.

look out on the interstate or highway.....
how many trucks are towing a load equal to the truck....
Look at all your big trucks look at all the 2500 and 3500 rigs.
all of them are rated to tow one to two times the truck weight.

If we went by that rule they would only have 10 and 20 foot trailers.
semi's would not be able to tow a loader, grader, tractor or anything.
