Walked away from SR I ordered. Almost regretting it

You guys have seen my other threads. I ordered one of the last 2017 sr 4x4 5speed trucks made. With convenience package so msrp is 27,800 or something, they said 27,600 was best they could do, 995 delivery included. I was so excited about it, that I figured it was worth the msrp if that was the best I could get, still much cheaper than any other 4x4 truck. I do admit though I was hoping they'd come down a little more on that price.

When it arrived and I took it for a test drive, I wasn't enthused. Maybe I was looking for something to complain about, I mean I knew it was going to be slow but the clunky and sticky clutch feeling put me off of it. The clutch was sticking to the floor, partially, then popping back up and hitting my foot. It felt really awkward to drive. It was fine, probably would have broken in shortly, but getting back in my Forester after the test drive made me really appreciate he clutch and transmission and ride, it's just fantastic in that car, very smooth. Feels like a damn race car after that. Duh, I know

Anyway I wasn't feeling so good about it after the test drive and I started wondering why I'm about to pay 30k otd for this little four banger that people are grabbing for 2-3K less in other places.

They wouldn't budge on price. I asked 'waive your 995 delivery fee at least so I get a decent deal, and I'll buy it right now,' and they said no can do. 'The margins are too thin'. They said they'll sell it today to somebody else.

Is it really that much to ask to waive their destination fee when I'm paying basically full msrp? Will the next guy that walks in be able to convince them of it? Or they're just counting on somebody who won't argue?

I have the money. I could buy it outright, that's not the issue. It's my decision making process. :smash: Normal people decide what they want and they just do it.

If you're not enthused with it during the test drive it's highly unlikely that it's going to grow on you. When I test drove my '13 V6, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. It felt like home. Growing up my uncle had an '85 and then an '89 Toyota pickup and all those good memories being driven around and learning how to drive in that truck seemed to come right back when I was driving that '13. Anyhow, 2 years later and I still LOVE getting in my truck and driving off. If the '17 SR isn't doing it for you, it ain't for you.

If its not right its not right man. Let it go and chew on the decision. If you come full circle and know you want one then go get one. Always more Tacomas to be had. Dont get caught up on that single one.

I bought mine without a test drive (although I was just coming off a 2016 that was written off). Paid full sticker. But I have been smiling ever since.

Honestly, you should buy something else entirely.

Don't settle for something you don't really love.

Test drive a v6 before you decide on the 2.7. It may help you figure out if you want a Tacoma either way. I had a 2.7 sr, and traded it for a v6. World of difference in driving enjoyment for me, personally speaking.

Nothing wrong with cutting bait. Buyers remorse is a much worse feeling. Besides you don't owe them anything. Definitely wouldn't lose sleep over it. Check back at the EOY. Can't imagine them wanting to pay the taxes on it for next year. Btw aren't the "18 out now?

I just have a little bit of a problem with spending 30k on used. I'd rather fork over the extra money for a brand new one, especially if I'm financing. On the other hand, I guess used it won't lose so much value if I decide to sell...

The 2.7L 5 speed MT is a dog but when I had mine it was a lot of fun to drive. I'm not out to race anyone. Now I have the 3.5L with the 6 MT. It's fun to drive too but damn the transmission and engine combination is herky jerky and comes to life in strange ways above 4000 rpms. Definitely more power but isn't smooth like the 5 speed.

I've been thinking about downgrading and grabbing a 2.7L 5 speed again. Life's too short.

And them being willing to sell it for $200 off MSRP and claiming that the margins are too thin is BS. It may, on the other hand, be true that they have another buyer waiting in the wings. Supply/demand, I suppose, but they could have knocked a couple grand off MSRP and still made money.

The last two in my area that sold went for $24,600.

These were with the utility package though.

I would think with convenience package you should be able to get it for $26,000 plus tax and title.

Every once in a while they ship with something wrong with the clutch. Of course they will take care of it down the line. Find another dealer with the same options on the truck and test drive it.

They are getting harder and harder to find.

If you haven't heard, they aren't making it any more.

So @Dabitha Nuggsworth , this would be your first pickup truck?

That is a big consideration, since while trucks are becoming more car like, they are still a different animal.

The last truck I bought I never even test drove it. My S10 crapped out in July 97 and I was working on a big construction project that was 12 hours 7days for months, I called a dealer and said all I needed was 6cyl 5 speed manual. There were none available, I called during lunch break a few days later and the dealer found one in Pennsylvania, I bought it over the phone. That truck was a beast, and lasted 19 years.

Trucks are trucks, really never thought too much about it before purchasing the Tacoma and joining TW.

We also bought a 2001 Subaru Forester that we still use- Subaru's are great vehicles, maybe stick with what you know.

That SR Tacoma would probably been a great vehicle that would have lasted forever if you took care of it, but you did the right thing trusting your "gut".

    My $.02

Yeah of course, they refunded it. I just put it on a 0% apr credit card, no harm.
