Hi All...i'd like to hardwire my garage door opener into one of the factory blanks. I was hoping to get some ideas/input. Here's what i was thinking:

    1. get a momentary push button/switch... like this one
    http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062508

and install that into the factory blank (or other kool location).

    2. run 2 wires from the push button - one to the garage opener's positive battery connection (and solder in place) and the other to a 12v power source (add-a-fuse in the under-dash fuse box maybe).

    3. run a wire from the garage opener's negative battery connection to a ground point.

    4. hide the remote behind the dash somewhere.

i'm hoping this method will eliminate the need for replacing batteries in the garage opener remote and look really kool. i just hate looking for the remote all the time ...because i hate having it in plain sight. feels like a security risk and easy way to get into my house.

    any input would be great.

Nice installation and a great idea. I don't have a overhead console...so that wouldn't be an option for me.

I did what you want to do in my bike, it works really well, I hide the opener under the seat to protect it from water and have access to replace the battery.
I don't think that a regular opener will work with 12v.
That's why I used a homelink for my truck.
    Good luck

I did the Homelink mod. There is a write up here somewhere. I'll be honest I was scared about this mod as it involves cutting the headliner. If you don't have steady hands I wouldn't go this route.

X2. I've done this mod on two trucks now, my truck and my dad's 2013 tacoma. It is an AWESOME mod. costs about $30 and takes about an hour and a half (going slow).

My only suggestion is to hook the homelink module up to the battery with some test leads before beginning installation to make sure it functions and is compatible with your garage door opener.

I considered different ways to wire it up, velcro it up or otherwise hide it. Settled on this method and, although not sexy, works pretty well.

the older 2nd gens (05-11) in some models sr5s-trds had the overhead console outside temp gauge with compass then sunglass holder and the others had the garage opener then sunglasses

then 2012 some had homelink on their rear view mirror and some didnt

i used an old garage door opener i had laying around. added a jumper to the 2 leads from the main open/close button (my soldering job is a bit sloppy)
    IMG_3292.jpg

then attached wires from the pos/neg terminals and ran them to the button and fuse box (with an add-a-fuse) and to a ground point
    IMG_3291.jpg
    IMG_3289.jpg

then i fished the wires thru the dash and connected them to the button and tossed the opener behind the dash so its hidden.
    IMG_3283.jpg IMG_3281.jpg

i forgot to mention...I used a dremmel on the back of the factory blank to shave off the tabs so they would not be in the way when I drilled the hole.

the button size i chose is 25mm...which is just about the same as 15/16". and just happened to have a spade bit that same size. I used it to drill the hole in the factory blank (making sure to keep it centered). it was a little too snug so i used the spade bit again (by hand this time) to scrape the hole and make it a little wider so that the button easily twisted into the hole.

it fit perfectly and works great.

the button comes in different LED colors...but like i said...its a little brighter then i expected and will take a little getting used to.

    buttons.jpg

heres a little wiring diagram to show how i connected everything.

    WIRING DIAGRAM.jpg

i dont remember which circuit i used for the add-a-fuse, but its one that gets power only when you turn the key. then it lights up and can be used. I selected that one for security reasons....because i didnt want to be worried about someone being able to get into the house just by getting into the truck and pressing the button and walking right into the garage (although no one will even know what the button is for).

hopefully this will give others ideas. i love the homelink install by El Tano and Zork above...but i had my heart set on a kool LED button in that very spot.

heres a couple of daytime pics
    IMG_3301.jpg IMG_3302.jpg

(the 2 USB ports was a good idea, too...charge phones and interface with head unit)

ok, so... lemme have it - comments, suggestions, etc.
    I can take it!

    Thats a great option, XwXRYANXwX.

a little pricey...i may consider that at some point. My gaol so far was to be able to eliminate the garage door opener floating around the cup holders or floor lol.... while providing a kool look.

Sub'd. This is awesome. I'd want a button without the light ring because that's too bright for me

Have a door pocket? Velcro it inside, out of sight of thieves and easy to use.

The thieves part is one of the reasons im not a huge fan of easy to find controls. Dealt with too many people that make it too easy to be burglarized.

they do have a similar button with no LED. the connections on the back would be different bc theres no need to provide power for the LED. almost any button would work.

and the original garage door opener works perfectly with the 12v system. i was afraid that it would not be able to handle it.
