My 2010 Tacoma Prerunner 2wd dbl cab will be deliver on Monday. I ordered it with a hitch becuase I wanted a factory setup. I'm now told only 4wd can have the hitch, with or without towing packages. What gives?

BS. who's telling you this? the dealer? it's an option listed on Toyota.com. sounds like maybe they are just trying to cover their ass on not ordering you the correct options.

The dealer! I order the vehicle and the only option I asked for was the hitch. Said it is only available on 4WD. I thought it was BS. All I need to tow is a small mortorcycle trailer. Didn't thibnk I needed a towing package for that, and especially not 4WD. I have an email to Toyota.com.

Sounds to me like they are just trying to sell you what they have in stock nearby. Definitely BS!

have you signed papers yet? if not, i would use this as leverage to get free maintenance or some accessories.

don't let them mess with you either...they may bolt a hitch on it and tell you you're good...not a true towing package. the tranny cooler is the main reason to get the towing package. the transmission (V6 anyways) runs a bit on the hot side and the extra cooling will keep it alive much longer.

Where are you located BTW? I may have a factory hitch for a 2010 up for sale in a few weeks (when I receive my All-Pro rear bumper).

Well, after a call to Toyota and their own parts department, they figured out the truck can have a hitch. So yesterday I picked it up with a hitch.

Two questions: 1) does the bar(square bar with a plate which has a hole in it, which you install a ball), come with the hitch, if not, where do I get one? 2) The storage bins in the truck bed, what do you put in there, it's open to the outside (drain holes)/

You can get a hitch at any aut store even walmart. In the storrage bins I actualy keep my hitch, but if you take a sharp turn or a speed bump too fast the hitch comes out and slides around your bed

I cut out a square of carpet and stuck it in the storage bin, stops everything rattling around. And I had to adjust the catches on the door so it wouldn't rattle itself open.

We just bought a used '06 Prerunner with the towing package. Since I've already got the receiver and wiring, I thought I'd get a hitch just in case I had need to pull a trailer at some point.

With that thought in mind, what drop should I look for in the hitch? Is there any sort of common height for trailer tongues or are they all over the map?

    Even Cabelas has hitches. ;)

    thanks,
    hank

NOt too sure, we've had this hitch for about 5 years...so it's been used alot. We just have a light weight one since we mainly tow a 600 lb sail boat. Or a 800 lb camping trailor

Related, is it better to have it factory installed? Dealer was trying to add it on at dealer in order to move the car they had on lot. He did say I didn't need the entire tow "package" but just the hitch if I wasn't towing over a certain amount of wait. Is any of this true?
    Thanks.

With just an aftermarket hitch, Tacoma is rated at 3500 pounds.*

With the full tow package (oil cooler, aux trans cooler, factory hitch, etc.) it is rated to tow 6500 pounds.

*Since posting this, another discussion on here has concluded that the 3500 pound rating is for bumper towing, and that we can probably tow 5000 pounds on a non-tow-package truck if you have a properly rated receiver hitch.
