So I have a 2001 Tacoma with a 3.4 and I’m having this very odd problem that some of you are very aware and familiar with. All of the sudden one day last week I go to start the car and it runs for 1.2 seconds and then turns off. So I’m thinking to myself fuel pump and filter, well that was wrong. So now I’m going to change the Cranks sensor and pray a lot. I need to the feel pump and filter anyway but I’m chasing my tail looking for the real slim shady. I’ve had this truck for 18 years And drive it like a baby together we put 300,000 miles going back-and-forth from Canada to Mississippi, if any of y’all have some idea what my get me going again. Thanks much. Thank you guys very much. UPDATE. Some Tacoma’s with all the options made in 2000-2004 have a crazy ALARM system. If the lock actuators don’t fully go up and down it trips the system and thinks your pride and joy is being stolen. But since I had it part I replaced the Cam and crank sensors. She’s all good for another 300

Does it sound different as you crank it over? Might have broke the timing belt.

My 97, 3.4L did something similar yesterday, the truck cranked and ran fine, made a trip to Walmart, come back out, cranks and runs fine leaving the parking lot and it just shuts off. It would try to crank but wouldn’t start, finally after a few minutes it’s starts, i move About 50 yards and it shuts off again. No stumbling or anything, it just dies. Had to pull it about 8 miles to the house, it will turn over but will not start. Kind of perplexed as where to start looking.

Having a similar issue with a 2001 2.7L prerunner 4-door, was the timing belt the issue?

Have you read for codes while the truck is on?

It can be numerous things too. I'd say start with the MAF and sensor connection, breather hoses that could be loose or broken.

    Then maybe your fuel pump.

I've even seen O2 sensors crap out and cause the motor to run rich and stall it out.

My daughter's 02 behaves similarly - following... She's not getting any codes/lights, states it happens mostly when warm/hot outside. Or has set for a while. She might go 2-5 days between events...
