    Hello all,
i been lurking this website for over two years lol, I do have a 3rd gen tacoma.I finally have a question for yall. Before i ask, I always warm up my truck for 3-5 minutes before i go to work(does anybody else does this?) when its hot outside the oil temp jumps to about mid range , is it safe to take off or should i just wait for it to “warm up”?

A “warm up” is not required to drive our trucks. Your truck is going to take longer to heat up anyways if your sitting at idle.

Unless your hooked up to a heater block in the artic circle??

Years ago I used to warm my truck up to full temp, these days just about 30 seconds, enough time to get the oil circulated through the motor

No need to warm up. However, letting oil work its way to the heads, before additional revvs can't hurt. I wait for the engine to "change pitch" before I pull away (15 -20 seconds). Even that is probably excessive.

Going from a turboed 4banger car to this truck, its amazing to me how much longer it takes to get heat into the engine in this truck then the car. Personally I usually let it sit for 30 seconds before taking off. That usually gives me time to get the seatbelt on, turn the radio on, etc. On super cold days I might wait a full min but wont let it sit idle for 5-10 mins. Is it necessary? No probably not, but it makes me feel good and doesn't hurt anything so fuck it.

Warmup is old school thinking (I’m old school but don’t warm up my vehicle). There is no reason to warm up modern vehicle engines. You gain nothing by doing so. Start, put it in gear and go. The only time you may want to have a short warm up is in extreme cold, below freezing. Then you want to drive slow at first for a short distance. It’s your automatic tranny that really needs to warm up in cold weather and you have to put it in gear and drive it for the tranny to warm up. But in everyday driving in normal temperatures just start and go.

No need to warm up modern vehicles. None.

I have to warm up my 69 Dart for almost 10-15 minutes before it wants to go. But thats the difference between modern fuel injection with an ECU and a 6 barrel carb.

If it's a cold start, I wait for the evap system purge sound before I start driving.

There's no need for such a long warm-up. With gas as expensive as it is, save as best you can! All the best to you and yours.

I haven't warmed up my trucks in the last 22 years. Well maybe a few times when up in northern quebec when -40.

I jump in my truck. I start it. I put on my seat belt and start driving. If the windows are fogged up or frosty, I make sure I can safely see. The engine will be fine driving when cold and will warm up faster under load. Long term idling an engine is not the best thing for it.

    Good info on here!

    Welcome OP.

I have another question...How about putting a cold engine in neutral while waiting at a red light? (Asking for a friend) lol

This disengages the clutches and torque converter, removing load from engine and transmission. Warm up will happen faster in gear.
