If it’s actually cold (-20C or more) it is a good idea to let it run a bit so the engine can warm the transmission a little. Helps stop slow sloppy shifts from thick cold fluid. Saves wear on transmission. But that’s only needed on really cold days. Waiting 30 seconds for oil to get moving is fine for most days.

It never really was a needed thing.

Going from cold start to full throttle merging is going to be rough on things, but starting, putting on your seatbelt and setting out at a reasonable rate is fine even down to fairly fold temps.

One of the advantages of modern thin oils is that they work fine when cold.

"Warming up" was more about getting the intake manifold and carb up to temp so that the mixture is somewhat consistent.

I'll plug in if it's -20c cold, and watch the scangague for oil and coolant before I drive it too hard. Coolant temps are usually up to regular operating temps before I've got the windows scraped.

Although your coolant gauge is showing operating temps the engine oil and transmission fluid takes a bit longer. Tires also need to be taken into consideration. The colder it is out, the longer it'll take for those 3 to get up to temp.

Having a real oil pressure gage is nice.

Not necessary, and will cause more harm than good in Modern engines. Cylinder pressure creates ring seal, and not much cylinder pressure at idle (especially on Atkinson cycle)

you will have more fuel dilution of the oil if you let it sit and idle for excessive time. Maybe in sub zero temps, give it 30 seconds or so while you close the door, install your seatbelt, get your junk thrown in the back seat, etc…then go.

LOL. So you first say there's no need to warm up then proceed to say "let it warm up to operating temp".

Many in this thread don't know what they're answering or are giving incomplete answers. In this day and age of hooligan drivers pegging the rev limiter on highway entrance ramps I'd advise you let your head warm up before asking it to handle 6000 explosions a minute. If you're the type of driver that can navigate town at less than 3500 rpm then no warm up required. My $0.02 and worth what you jack-a-lopes paid. Is it Friday yet?

I start my truck at night before i go to bed and let it idle overnight while i sleep. When i leave for work in the morning, truck is warmed up and ready to go, this makes me feel safe and secure.

I start my truck, then put on my seat belt, finish my alcoholic beverage, finish the contents of my crack pipe, and then go. This way I always have 2 hands on the steering wheel. Safety first!!

I definitely "warm up" unless its already warm.
It's cold up at 10,200ft. I try not to pull away until the rpm's have come back down to normal.

Doesn't anyone get frost or ice on their windshield and windows? I remote start and let it thaw at least 5 minutes. Unless you want to scrape it which i don't do. And I set the fan and defrost the night before.

When I get ice/frost I just scrape it off. Much quicker then waiting for it to defrost.

If its between my engine heating up, or me cooling down, in year round 80-100 degree humid weather, I'm slangin' that thing in drive, AC on blast, windows down, and revving it to the moon to get some wind in my hair within seconds of it turning over. If the truck don't like it, I'll get another one, preferably with colder AC.
