Should I be in 4hi or 4lo when crossing tire height water on a loose rock/dirt trail? I have a stock trd offroad with K02's .I'm new to offroading and want to learn the best use for this specific application. One of my favorite fishing spots has a trail that is prone to flooding after heavy rain and want to know the best way to navigate it.

    Thanks in advance!

    Kyle

There is zero chance I would cross tire height water without serious modifxations to the truck.

IF i felt like ruining my truck, Id do it in 4l

I'm pretty much always in 4lo when off road as it's easier on the auto trans temps and just better power and control. Plus mts and locker only work on 4lo

If you're going through tire height that's a pretty deep crossing. And I think water ingestion is a big concern.

Your air intake is in the passenger fender right above your tire.
You should also extend all your breathers higher.

Should be in 2nd gear 4lo (manual or in s mode 2nd for auto)
Pretty much coast into the water to create a bow then keep on the momentum to ride that bow to keep water out of the engine bay

Not sure, but your seat bottom could be used as a flotation device.

I agree with this for sure.

Or be with someone who has done it and can show you.

Since he didn't ask for what lift to fit 33 he's not getting attacked lol

If you are having to go through water often you might want to check into the Dobinsons snorkel for your truck.

And look into raising your rear diff breather. Its low from the factory and can suck water into your rear diff.

Haha Maybe not quite tire height but it was pretty deep, i've considered doing the rear diff relocation. Tried adding a video of what i went through but it's not the right file

I’ve gone through water deep enough that the fan was slapping the water, no harm no foul. But it was more or less a slow stream.

And based on video looks like you might have been going to fast. Looks like you would've been on top of the bow.

I have run my fj40 in over the fender water. It was scary as all get out. No doors so I had 18 inches of water running across the floor of the truck. To do this I blocked the radiator so the water would not pull my fan into it. This also acts like a bow of a boat and creating a hollow spot in the water for the air intake.

I used 4low and locked the rear end, 1st gear about 3 mph the whole way across.

Not gonna lie, that took some balls. I’d have been a little puckered not knowing if it gets 6” deeper.
